Utetheisa pulchella is a very rare moth belongs to Endagered species in Europe in the few places of their permanent presence potentially by the rampant use of the coasts (tourism infrastructure).

It is only present at a few places in coastal areas of the Mediterranean (Southern Spain, Balearic Islands, Sardinia, Corsica, Sicily, southern Greek islands such as Crete, Cyprus). U. pulchella also occurs in the Canaries and Madeira.

Moreover, U. pulchella usually migrates in rather low population density to the north and was occasionally found north of the Alps in Germany, northern France and the British Isles.

Habitat: U. pulchella inhabits mainly coastal dunes, rocky areas, dry slopes and other warm, gappy vegetated habitats.

It has several generations per year. It has short flight phases end at stalks, stems and flowers and the in flight whitish moths (because of the hind wings) then rest there calm longitudinally oriented and with wings applied close to the body (see in picture).

U. pulchella is a polyphagus species of wild and cultivated plants. Main hosts are plants of family Boraginaceae e.g. Echium species, Borago officinalis, Anchusa azurea, Heliotropium sp,Myosotis sp and the cultivated plants Musa paradisiaca Fam. Musaceae.

Hello Nikos,
The contrasting red, black and yellow markings on a blanket of white makes for some very attractive wings. Nicely focused and displaying very good DOF due to your f/20 aperture. Love the vertical branch on which it is perched and the exposure is right on the mark. I really like the dark BG. Thank you for showing us this rare specimen.
