Happy end and new beginning for my butterflies’ posts. This photo was taken on Ikaria island last year. I will be there next week for a few days including Easter.

Papilio machaon Linaeus 1758
Family: Papilionidae
Common names: Swallowtail [En], Machaon [Fr], Macaone [It], Macaón [Sp], Koninginnenpage [Nl], Schwalbenschwanz [De], Paź królowej [Po], Makaonfjäril [Sv], Πεταλούδα Μαχάων [Gr], Kırlangıçkuyruk [Tu]

It occurs throughout the Palearctic region in Europe and Asia; it also occurs across North America.
This striking butterfly is yellow with black wing and vein markings and a wingspan of 8 to 10 cm. The hind wings of both sexes have a pair of protruding tails which give the butterfly its common name. Just below each tail is a red eye spot.
There are 37 subspecies.
At lower elevations these butterflies fly from March to September.
The butterfly has a strong and fast flight but frequently pauses to hover over flowering herbs and sip nectar. It frequents the alpine meadows and hillsides and is fond of 'hilltopping'. At lower elevations it can also be seen visiting gardens.
P. machaon is protected by law in several countries, including Hungary, UK, Austria.

They mate here on a shrub of Chaste Tree (Vitex agnus-castus). This plant is commonly called monk's pepper because it was originally used as anti-libido medicine by monks. It is believed to be an anaphrodisiac, hence the name chaste tree. It seems that it has a opposite effect for the butterflies!
