Unlike on some others Aegean island (Lesvos, Samos, Rhodes…), orchids are not so common on Ikaria. I was very happy to find this endemic species… while looking for snakes that I did not find!
Because of this rarity, I give only the municipality name and not the exact location.

Ophrys icariensis Hirth & Spaeth, 1990
Syn.: Ophrys argolica H. Fleischmann subsp. icariensis (Hirth & Spaeth 1990) Kreutz
Family: Orchidaceae
(argolica group)

This rare Ophrys is endemic to Ikaria (east Aegean) and Naxos (Cyclades) islands, recently classified to the argolica group. Formerly, it was classified in the holserica (bornmuelleri) group, as it exibits some characteristics similar to members of the latter, but it seems also to be influenced by species of the mammosa group (macula design, small appendage). Some other particularities are the trapezoid, entire lip, the purple sepals and petals, the small projections of the ‘shoulders’ of the lip and the relatively long petals (in contrast with the holoserica group). The flowers are variable in shape, ‘fucifloroid’, sometimes ‘scolopaxoid’.
It grows on calcareous, sunny soils, usually in grassy places between bushes. It flowers through March - April.
