Latin Pseudopanthera macularia.
Wingspan 2.6-3cm.Wings golden yellow with blackish spots, ground-colour varying from orange to whitish yellow, becoming noticeably paler with age.
Distribution: Throughout Europe except for Artic regions, up to 1900m,in open woodlands and warm shrubby areas.
Flight period: Late Apr to mid July, one brood.
Behaviour: Flies in bright sunshine feeds at flowers on nectar, commonly in large numbers, otherwise resting on grasses or herbs, eggs laid on leaves of the caterpillar’ s food plants.
Caterpillar: Slender green with dark back and white stripes on sides, without hairs. Feeds on Wood Sage, dead-needle, woundwort, mint and related plants. Chrysalis on the ground in a cocoon mixed with soil or moss.
