At last we had the opportunity to take some shots of this colourful species that is a very rare visitor to Sweden but quite common in Lesvos.
Using our hire-car as a hide we were able to approach these bee-Eaters to within about 12 meters. I took this just as one had landed on the stick.

European bee-eater Merops apiaster

Swedish name: Biätare

Basically a S. European and Turkish species nesting in colonies holes in banks that they excavate. They overwinter in tropical Africa to arrive at their breeding sites in April or May further north.

They feed on all kinds of larger insects that include dragonflies and bees. This was taken near a river estuary where there is a colony nearby.

This was taken with my camera resting on the open window at a distance of a bout 12 meters. After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was selectively sharpened

Hej and good morning dostum Ivan,

Truly spectacular capture Ivan! Bravo!
George Veltchev

A fantastic capture with rather nice aesthetical implications Ivan, postures look real fine from this favourable vantage point, and the colours fabulous. Think the image is slightly underexposed with an overall brownish cast, tried to correct both in my WS, hope you'll find the result pleasant my friend.

Ciao Ivan. This is a masterpiece. Absolutely! One of the best recentrle seen.

Hello Ivan,
You are very lucky to see this lovely bird! I never see them... maybe I travelled in Greece too early. Nice composition with great colours and pose. Good night MF,

Ciao Ivan, splendid couple of lovely bee-eater with fantastic colors, wonderful blurry BG, superb sharpness and good details, very well done my friend, ciao Silvio

Dear Ivan,
A stunning gallery of Merops apiaster
Another Common name in South Africa is Golden Backed Bee-eater

It is a common resident and Summer visitor here, easily identified by its gold and brown mantle.

I often discuss with my husband the odd habit, that European Migrants rather breed in Europe than in South Africa, where food is plenty.

I admire in your photo the turquoise blue forehead on the left animal, and the turquoise underparts of both animals.

Do you think, the bird on the right of the photo might have been a Juvenile? One of my field guide talks about being a dull version of the adult…

It also mentions that they mostly occur in flocks, catching insects in graceful aerial manoeuvres and usually returning to the same perch to eat their prey (K Newman. Birds of Southern Africa)

I notice that you had the compulsory flash on (did not fire) – do you always leave it on in the in the Mediterranean?

Thanks to your perfect control of depth of field your work offers so many details: the cracking bark of the (dead?) tree, the tiny brown and yellow feathers on the belly of the right hand bird.

I do like the natural colours, and it is a pleasure to view this image.

Have a nice week-end
Kind Regards also to Ulla

Hello Ivan,
Bee eaters are beautiful birds anywhere in this planet. You composition here is like a Chinese art piece. Nice double with one perched with opened wings. Well metered exposure against the silenced background.
Thanks and kind regards,
