[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Currently considered endemic to Rhodes, this orchid has been described recently after many successive visits to Rhodes island and in situ researches by the authors. Similar plants were named as "Ophrys bremifera or Ophrys oestrifera", in the past. Characteristics of this species are the long sepals (similar to the sepals of the Cycladic Ophrys ceto), the long petals and the variability of the side lip pilosity. According to this last characteristic, the authors classified Ophrys polyxo to the heldreichii group. Most probably it flowers from the end of March until mid April and prefers low altitudes.

Beautiful orchid! One of the loveliest of Rhodes. Excellent capture! Hope you took some close-ups, too.
