Fungi season already started in Ireland, no doubt. A week ago, when I visited the majestic Glenshelane Forest I found a lot, including ca. 20-25 fruitbodies of False Saffron Milkcap (Lactarius deterrimus Gröger). Common species in Eurasia, forming mycorrhizal connection strictly and exclusively with spruce (Picea sp.), or, very rarely, in the arctic / alpine zone with the dwarf shrub bearberry (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi). Good edible, traditionally cooked or done as pickles. Gills decurrent (see the pic), milking when injured. Milk color: firstly carrot-red, then becomes maroon (within 10-30 minutes), later dirty green on air.
Photo was taken with flash, f/8, 1/20 sec. and ISO 80. PP: slight level adjustment; after re-sizing re-sharpening of the fruitbody.
This is the 1st time this common species pops up in my gallery, previously I shared Lactarius quietus, L. piperatus and L. acerrimus from the genera, here on TrekNature.
Thanks for looking. |

Hello Laszlo,
I like this interesting fungi. You take a very good shot with amazing sharpness and focus from a nice POV. It is shaped like a water tower for water storage....

Hi Laszlo
Interesting shape. It looks like an umbrella on a windy day.
Aesthetic presentation.
