The Wall Brown, Lasiommata megera, is a butterfly in the family Nymphalidae (subfamily Satyrinae). It is widespread in the Palearctic ecozone with a large variety of habitats and a number of generations a year.
Found in North Africa, Europe, Caucasus, Asia Minor, Middle East, West Siberia, North Tian-Shan, Dzhungarsky Alatau, Kazakhstan and Dzhungaria.
Habitats include forest edges and clearings, shrubby areas in ravines and river valleys and sparse woodlands. Also found in montane habitats up to 0–3,000 metres.
The imago flies from April to October in two or three generations dependant on locality and altitude. The larva feeds on grasses in the genera Festuca, Bromus, Deschampsia, Poa, Dactylis and Brachypodium.
"The egg is pale green when first laid, and in shape it is almost spherical, but rather higher than broad ; it is finely ribbed and reticulated, but unless examined through a lens it appears to be quite smooth. The caterpillar when full grown is whitish-green, dotted with white. From the larger of these dots on the back arise greyish bristles ; the three lines on the back (dorsal and sub-dorsal) are whitish, edged with dark green ; the line on the sides (spiracular) is white, fringed with greyish hairs ; anal points green, hairy, extreme tips white. Head larger than the first ring (first thoracic segment), green dotted with white and hairy,jaws marked with brownish.The chrysalis is green, with yellow-tinted white markings on the edge of the wing covers and ridges ; the spots on the body are yellowish, or sometimes white. Occasionally the chrysalids are blackish, with white or yellow points on the body. (South 1906)

Descrizione
Farfalla di medie dimensioni, caratterizzata da una livrea arancione con un reticolo di disegni marroni. Le ali anteriori mostrano un grosso ocello apicale con pupilla, le posteriori quattro ocelli posdiscali, anch'essi con punto bianco centrale. Le parti inferiori delle ali anteriori ripetono gli stessi motivi della pagina supero-anteriore, mentre, posteriormente, evidenziano una trama di disegni confusi tra i quali si individua una delicata serie di ocelli cerchiati di bruno.

Biologia
L'inverno viene trascorso allo stadio larvale. I primi sfarfallamenti avvengono già nella prima decade di marzo e proseguono con più generazioni fino a novembre. Il bruco, a vita notturna e di colore verde bluastro con linee longitudinali biancastre, si nutre di diverse Graminacee, come erba mazzolina, fienarola, orzo selvatico ecc.

Distribuzione ed ecologia
Presente in Europa (salvo Scozia e gran parte della Scandinavia), Nordafrica, Asia Minore, Russia, Iran. Ovunque in Italia, dal livello del mare ai 1500 m. Nel territorio, è tra le specie più comuni, oltre che di precoce apparizione. Frequenta per lo più biotopi collinari assolati (strade campestri, margini di bosco, siepi e campagne coltivate).

Hello Luciano,

Hope you are well, bro. Nice to meet you after a long time. An excellent shot of this lovely Wall Brown butterfly which seems perhaps the last beleaguered specimen of this season which has offered you a chance to shoot it and I think after shooting it with your camera, you should have shot it with a pistol, for I think Silvio has already tried this and it has parts of its wings missing.....smile. Hello Luciano,
First I must say bravo to the butterfly, for it's ability to still fly after such devastating damage to it's wings. Focus is tac sharp showing exceptional detail. Colors are well saturated and the exposure is right on the money. I like the low POV you chose which is quite attractive and not often presented. Great job!!

This guy just came from the battlefield, as I see. :-) Incredible photo, fantastic exposure control, composition and sharpness. Even from the thumbnail view, I immediately knew who made this photo, without checking the name out. ;-) You have your own individual style, which makes your photography different from anyone else's.
