Leptotes pirithous is a butterfly of the family Lycaenidae. Its common names are Lang's Short-tailed Blue and Common Zebra Blue.
Leptotes pirithous is a small butterfly with a wingspan of 21–29 mm in males and 24–30 mm in females. The uppersides of the wings are purple bluish in males, bluish-brown in female. The undersides are dark beige striped with white lines. The hindwings show marginal orange and black spots and two small tails. For the design of the undersides of the wings they can be confused with Lampides boeticus and Cacyreus marshalli. These butterflies fly from February to November depending on the location. They are regular migrants.
The larvae feed on the flowers and fruits of Fabaceae, Rosaceae and Plumbaginaceae species, including Plumbago capensis, Indigofera, Rynchosia, Vigna, Burkea, Mundulea, Melilotus, Crataegus, Quercus suber, Medicago sativa, Trifolium alexandrium, Arachis hypogaea, Lythrum, Calluna, Genista, Dorycnium, Lythrum salicaria, Calluna vulgaris, Onobrychis viciifolia, Ulex and Melilotus alba. A life cycle takes about 4–8 weeks, depending on the temperature.

LEPTOTES PIRITHOUS

Leptotes pirithous (Linnaeus, 1767),è una farfalla della famiglia Lycaenidae.
La superficie dorsale delle ali è di colore blu violaceo nei maschi, bruno grigiastro con macchie violacee nella femmina. La superficie ventrale è in entrambi i sessi di colore biancastro, con macchie brune disposte secondo un disegno geometrico complesso. Le ali posteriori, che hanno una esile coda in corrispondenza della seconda nervatura cubitale, presentano due caratteristiche macchie nere contornate di verde e di arancio.
Può essere confusa con le seguenti specie: Lampides boeticus e Cacyreus marshalli.È presente in Africa del Nord, Europa meridionale e Asia minore.
In Italia è abbastanza comune in tutte le regioni, isole comprese.Tra le specie vegetali preferite dalle larve ci sono diverse specie di Fabaceae (Melilotus officinalis, Melilotus alba), Lythraceae (Lythrum salicaria), Polygonaceae (Polygonum aviculare), Plumbaginaceae (Plumbago spp.), Ericaceae (Calluna vulgaris).

Beautiful blue species! Once Silvio posted this butterfly. Well captured despite its head; and it's the main thing. Human portrait with out head!!! Although we can see it's busy to drink honey, but I prefer to see butterfly's head in such situation; otherwise it doesn't look complete.

Lovely capture.......

We do have this species here in India, but it is not a 'common' one as its name suggests, Luciano.
It's a fairly well managed shot with good details on the wings.

je n'ai jamais photographiée cette espèce de papillon, je ne sais même pas si ça existe chez moi, c'est vrai qu'il a le nez dans la fleur et qu'on ne voit pas sa tête, mais la photo est très belle quand même, la netteté, les couleurs et la composition sont excellents
