The cold has arrived and the butterflies have disappeared, so I show you a curiosity of the end of September, a common species that I have shown many times, but with a very big one of the last generation, as opposed to the small ones observed in spring.

Class: Insecta

Order: Lepidoptera

Superfamily: Papilionoidea

Family: Nymphalidae

Genus: Issoria

Species: I. lathonia

The Queen of Spain Fritillary (Issoria lathonia) is a butterfly of the Nymphalidae family. It is common in southern Europe, migrating as far north as south Scandinavia every summer. It is a very rare visitor to the British Isles. Heat-dependent, this species is found breeding on the hottest places of the foodplants of the larvae (prefers Viola tricolor and Viola arvensis). The adult is a strong flyer, and may be found anywhere but forests.
The eggs of this species are laid on the Wild Pansy ( Viola tricolor).

ISSORIA LATHONIA

Pierre
