[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Erebia triaria, de Prunner's Ringlet

A short while ago I posted the upperside of a male of E. triaria and now I am submitting a shot of a female showing the underside. I am grateful to Peter Roos for confirming this identity for me.

The location of Sestriere is a skiing resort in the Piedmontese Alps, close to the border with France and at the head of the Valley of Chisone. Above the residential area of the town is a spread of parkland and meadow, which in th summer is full of flowers and fresh water springs. This butterfly can be found on steep stony slopes facing the sun.

This species is naturally very dark underneath and it is difficult to see the detail of the markings under normal lighting conditions. So for this picture I have "lightened the shadows" using Photoshop so that the complex patterning becomes more clear.

The image has also be cropped and resized for TN.

Hi Alan,
a beautiful one with its hairs well seen. Though its brownish, the contrast could be seen against the background.
Nice natural surroundings well depicted.

regards,
Foozi

Hi,
Fine specimen and species too. The underside looks more brilliant than the upperside and I liked the colors and design of the hind wing. tfs.

Hello Alan,
Perfect shot of this rare butterfly. Very nice colours and perfect DOF. I wonder what is the white something the butterfly is sitting on it? ;-)
