[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Speckled Wood, Pararge aergeria.

The Speckled Wood is very widely distributed in Europe, but appears in two different sub-species. In this collage I have illustrated butterflies from both Italy and England so that the colour differences can be easily seen.

The two upper images were taken in Turin and show the nominate sub-species. The colour of the upperside speckles is quite an orange colour. The lower two images were taken last week in England and show the Northern sub-species P. a. tircis which has a much paler spot colour on the upperside.

The exif data relates to the top left image. All the pictures have been cropped and resized for TN.
