LEPIDOPTERA, LYCAENIDAE

Lycaena phlaeas (Linnaeus, 1758) / Small Copper

This butterfly is very widespread and often common to abundant depending on locality and time of year.
In addition to its palearctic distribution, this species also inhabits North America.
Its favourite haunts are dry, flowery places, open country or open steppes. In the mountains it ascends to an elevation of 2000m.
It flies from February to October om the coast and from April to October at higer altitudes, in a succession of broods throughout the year. On sunny late autumn days it can be seen flying about in the fields. It is a shy butterfly and a swift flyer.
It is very variable in extent of the orange and on the upperside hindwing the presence and extent of blue markings and the underside hindwing brightness.

*****

Ciao Marcello,
Excellent composition of this beautiful Copper!
excellent sharpness, vivid colour and details in the shot and I loved the light and shadow within the flower of the butterfuly
well done indeed with a good notes
ciao
Tony

Precioso trabajo.

hi Marcello,
really liking this shot. fantastic color! and i really like all the detail in the butterfly on such a low detailed flower. great composition, great focus, great pic. nice!

Ciao Silvio

Hi Marcello,
A lovely butterfly. Very well captured with good timing. Fine details and composition. It has some similarities in colors and patterns as that of Red Baronet. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hello Marcello,
This is a lovely image of the Sicilian Butterfly on a beautiful flower.
Is that a small snail I see there too?
I don't recognise the flower either.
Do you know what that is called?
A good sharp photo with a very good note.
Very nice work.
Steve

Ciao Marcello,
complimenti ancora per i tuoi bellissimi scatti. Questa foto in particolare prende a sberle l'inverno.
Eccellente la composizione. Bravo.

Hi Marcello,
a fiery red small copper well hidden between the fiery red petals of that little meadow flower - looking really unusual, not only for the early time of the year! A pleasure to see those brilliant colours in the powerful light of the mediterranean winter sun. Wondering which flower that could be. Thank you!
With best regards,
Peter
