Melitaea phoebe (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775)

Knapweed Fritillary

Widely distributed in N Africa, S and C Europe. Absent from Britain and from Mediterranean islands except Sicily. Flies April-August in two or more broods through summer at low altitudes; a single broad in July in mountains at high levels, often common on open, flowery slopes. Larval food plants Plantago, Centaurea.
A highly variable species. It is large compared to most Mellicta/Melitaea species and also rather bright and colourful, meaning that it is really quite easy to identify. It is characterised by the broken black lines that border the discal band on the underside and by the light hindwing postdiscal spots.
