these starry water lilies grow in a fountain in Palermo's botanical gardens
Palermo botanic gardens opened in 1795,and for over 200 years has allowed the study and difffusion not only in Palermo and Sicily but also in Europe and the Mediterranean of a large number of plant species , most of which are in fact indigenous to the tropical and subtropical regions. the current extension measures approx 10 acres was reaches in 1892. it belongs to the university of Palermo and it represents
the most significant structure of the department of
Botanic Sciences. Its origins date back to 1779 when
in Palermo the Academia dei Regi Studi,(the forerunners of the modern University) which , by establishing the course in "Botany and Medical Matters" obtained the old fort of Porta Carini and the small surrounding piece of land to establish a small
herb garden dedicated to the cultivation fo teh "semplici" i.e. of medicinal plants useful for both public health and teaching . soon teh yard becamee insufficient and in 1786 a now site was found at Vigna del Gallo, in S. Erasmo's plane, not far from the new senatorial villa called "Giulia
