Melanargia russiae (Esper, 1783)

Esper's Marbled White

Esper's marbled white is superficially similar to the other species of the genus Melanargia. There is a bar across the cell on both wing surfaces, together with a space created by two bars at the end of the cell areas. This can be quite easily spotted in the field.

HABITAT AND BIOLOGY. Flies June-July at 1000-1600m in grassy places in mountainous country. Host plants: Gramineae (Poa, Stipa, Brachypodium, etc.)

RANGE. Scattered populations from Portugal across Middle and S. Europe, the S. Urals and Kazakhstan to S. Siberia; from Asia Minor and the Middle East across Iran and Middle Asia to Tian-Shan.
The subspecies cleanthe is found in western Europe being replaced by japygia in Italy and Greece. The latter is more heavily marked black.
In Italy it is very local in the Apennines, Lazio and southwards to Puglia and Lucania; in Sicily often large.

Buongiorno Marcello,
immediately, I will include this species in the Satyrinae-THEME where you will find also further Melanargia-species.
A very sunny, brilliant and sharp picture of the species.
Really, a highly valuable and excellent contribution!

Hi Marcello,
I really like this photo with so bright light, wonderful dof and natural background and perfect focus and details. Congratulations!

Dear Marcello,
brilliant documentary shot of this very locally distributed species, coming with excellent details and a perfect angle of light to show the three-dimensional shapes and structures of wings just as well as the markings. I also really enjoy your way to show the natural habitat by use of wideangle settings and the small aperture's extended depth of field.
The artificial 3-D border of presentation looks a bit distracting to me as it is interfering with the image by making it look flat like a postcard rather than supporting the image's illusion of three-dimensional depth.
Thank you! My best regards,

Hello Marcello,
Not only have you made a fine capture of this uncommon species of Melanargia, M. russiae with good sharpness and well composed on the thistle flower, but the OOF BG is clear enough to show a little of the habitat. At the same time the BG is blurred enough to let the butterfly stand out.
Thanks for sharing this great shot,

Hi Marcello,
This butterfly is just a beauty with such intricate geometric designs on its wings. Great capture. Thanks a lot for sharing.
