LEPIDOPTERA, HESPERIIDAE

Carcharodus floccifera (Zeller, 1847)

Common english name: Tufted Marbled Skipper

This is one of the difficult group of Marbled Skippers, Carcharodus.
The species is similar to the marbled skipper and the mallow skipper, but neither of these shares quite the same behaviour. Marbled is also rather brighter - often yellowish - and mallow is a duller ground lover with subtly different markings (particularly the white markings on the forewings, which are narrower).
This species has a very distinctive rusty "tuft" on the underside forewing that acts to guide forewing and hindwing during flight.

RANGE. Middle and S. Europe to S. Siberia, Asia Minor. It is principally a mountain species of Spain, France, the Alps and the Balkans. It is also widespread in peninsular Italy and in Sicily.

HABITATS AND BIOLOGY. Grassy areas, forest edges, warm slopes/patches on plains and in the mountains. Flight: period: June-July, in two generations. Host plants in Europe: Lamiaceae.
The males have a characteristic habit of perching on flower heads or grass heads watching their territory and not infrequently buzzing off to defend it against intruders.

***

Hello Marcel
Another wonderful capture of a beautiful butterfly with nice colours! TFS friend! Best regards,

Hello Marcello,
Extraordinary Skipper.
Very good sharpness. Good exposure, POV,..
Well done

Hi Marcello, again,

another really interesting butterfly shot. Really the Carcharodus moths are ugly but that is just part of their charm. And to top it all, you present us with a species so rare that it has never been seen by TN friends. By the way, the composition of the picture is perfect. Thanks!
Best regards
Dietrich
