Nome Volgare: Podalirio

Famiglia: Papilionidae

Lunghezza ala anteriore mm. 32-40

Descrizione: farfalla di notevoli dimensioni, con colore di fondo bianco, leggermente tendente al giallo, su cui spiccano striature trasversali nere. Le ali posteriori mostrano una sottile fascia basale interna e, sul bordo esterno, una serie di lunule blu bordate di nero. Nella regione anale spicca un ocello con margine nero e rosso.

Maschio: colore giallo chiaro con fasce trasversali nere. Fascia submarginale delle posteriori contenente spazi semilunari blu. Macchia nera contenente un archetto blu e sormontata da un arco arancio nell'angolo anale delle posteriori. Bordo esterno delle posteriori fortemente dentato con una lunga coda in corrispondenza della terza nervatura mediana.

Femmina: simile al maschio ma generalmente più grande.

Rovescio: simile al dritto, ma con disegno più chiaro.

Bruco: forma ellissoidale e depressa, che ricorda quella di una piccola limaccia. La colorazione è verde con strisce gialle e macchie rosso-brune.

Distribuzione: presente in Europa, Nordafrica e Asia minore. Tutta Italia esclusa la Sardegna.

Habitat: Specie mesofila, si rinviene nei prati e nelle radure dal livello del mare al piano montano fino a circa 1600 metri s.l.m.

Generazioni annuali: due tre annue con sfarfallamento degli adulti da marzo a settembre a seconda della quota.

Hi Silvio,
Happy Easter to you, too. It's great to see a new image from you - even that "new" shot is 7 years old. Spectacular spring photo with blackthorn flowers and the "podalirio" - great composition. However, background should be mish-mashed more, I see no reason of using f/22 (eventhough this is often used for "very white", especially snowy scenes. But due to the very narrow aperture, the background remained sharp, and the butterfly doesn't fully gain the viewers' attention).
