Common malachite beetle - Malachius bipustulatus - Family: Melyridae

A relatively soft-bodied beetle, the malachite beetle is metallic green with a bright scarlet spot at the end of each wing-case. The male has a complicated series of flanges and cups on its antennae which it uses to transfer sex-pheromones to the female prior to mating. When alarmed, both sexes exude soft, bright red pouches from the sides of the body which give off a smell that deters predators.

Adults may be found on a variety of open-structured flowers in gardens, especially those of the daisy, carrot and rose family. Here they feed on pollen and nectar, as well as on other insects visiting the flowers. The larvae eat small invertebrates, particularly other insect larvae such as caterpillars and maggots, finding them under bark, on grass roots and in litter.

Food
The larvae of this beetle may feed on slugs. Adults live mostly on pollen and may be found on almost any garden flower.

Plants
Daisy, Dog rose, Field rose, Hedgehog rose, Michaelmas daisy, Ox-eye daisy, Shasta daisy, Sweet briar, Wild carrot

Ciao Luciano,
Ciao e buona domenica,
Marcello

Hello Luciano,

My best regards,
Peter

Excellent details and a superb diagonal composition on this wonderful capture. Those colours are really amazing -- exactly like the stone for which it is named!

bello scarabeo dai colori vivi
bene focalizzato e buoni dettagli

Bonita toma con excelentes colores Luciano.
El pequeño desenfoque de la parte imferior
no impide apreciar con claridad todos los
detalles. Buen encuadre y naturalidad en
los colores.

Hi Luiano,

I appreciate this Malachius picture a lot because it's a small beetle, it's nicely portrayed in perfect pose and composition and because you don't see it often. Very well done!
Best regards
Dietrich
