Coleoptera, Elateridae

Ctenicera virens (Schrank, 1781)

Lenght: 20 mm.
Distribution: Central Europe, Alps, Carpathian Mts., Balkan Peninsula, Crimea

Click beetles (family Elateridae), sometimes called elaters, skipjacks, snapping beetles, or spring beetles, are a cosmopolitan family. There are about 7000 known species. The appearance of the Elateridae is characteristic. They are provided with very efficient wings and the beetles take readily to flight. Many species love to bask in the sun. A peculiar character of these insects is their power of leaping into the air when lying on the back, a distinct clicking noise accompanying the movement. From this derives their popular names “Click Beetles” or Skipjacks. Click beetles can be large and colorful (some are brilliant metallic green), but most are small to medium-sized and dull. The adults are typically nocturnal and phytophagous. In hot weather, they are prone to enter people's houses at night if entries or windows are left opened. The larvae of a few species, called wireworms, can be serious pests of corn and other grains, especially after a field has been left fallow.

Note in italiano

Hello Marcello,
your picture collection offers a high species diversity and includes many first class works like this one. I cannot imagine that this species can be presented with substantially higher quality. For me ... a clear favourite picture!

Bonjour Marcello,
Excellente cette image de ce coléoptère. J'ai souvent essayé de photographier des membres de cette famille et n'ai jamais vraiment bien réussi. Chez toi, tout est clair et net. Bravo
Bonne journée

Sencillamente maravillosa. Enhorabuena por tan excelente captura. Los colores están muy bien logrados. Abrazo: J. Ignasi.

Hi Marcello,
A very beautiful capture of this click beetle. When I was young we in our village used to play with this beetle (the small ones) inside a coke cap and listen the clicking sound. Its shield is very strong. Nice details and composition. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hi Marcello!
I was not present on TN for a longer time and I see that I overlooked many interesting pictures like this one. Elateridae are not very often presented in TN gallery, and moreover this presentation is really great. Beetle is very sharp, has perfect details, and the photo is very nice coloured. It is a pleasure to watch it! :)
Please be sure that I will be back soon in your gallery, as here I can find many interesting insect species! :)
Best greetings,

PS. I am waiting for your Ameles pictures! And many thanks for looking at my mantis photo :)
