LEPIDOPTERA, LYCAENIDAE

Cupido minimus (Fuessly, 1775)

Common English Name: Small Blue

Description. This is one of Europe's smallest butterflies and despite its common name not particularly blue. It measures little over 20mm in wingspan and is distinctive for this reason alone. Both sexes are rather dull brown on the upperside. The underside is silvery grey with numerous small black dots. Sexes differ little in size. Males show a blue suffusion at base of wings on both sides.

Flight time. It flies in April-July in a single brood.

Habitat. A colonial species found in calcareous and dune grassland. Adults fly low over the habitat. Males gather in tall vegetation waiting for females. Once mated females avoid males and remain close to feeding and egg-laying sites. Females lay on the flowerheads of Kidney Vetch Anthyllis vulneraria.

Distribution. From northern Spain to Greece and Scandinavia. In its northern range it is missing from large areas. Absent from the Mediterranean islands except Sicily.
In Sicily flies Cupido minimus trinacriae Verity, 1919. Very small (wingspan: 14-18 mm) and upperside dark, only an occasional blue scale, occurs in late April-May, from sea level to 1000m.

Bonjour Marcello,
Oui, il est beau le Cupido minimus que je vois souvent aussi sur les prairies alpines. Quelque fois la partie supérieure a même un très beau reflet coloré.
Joyeux Noël à toi et à ta famille et encore merci pour toutes tes contribution remarquables

Buongiorno Marcello,
you clearly show Cupido 'maximus' here - the small butterfly really enlarged. Even on the wings of this small species rows of scales are clearly visible. Colours appear very natural. Beautiful composition and light.
Best wishes, Peter

Atrevido encuadre aunque bien resuelto. Bonita postura de las antenas. Una foto interesante como muchas sobre Lycaenidae.
