L'Alzavola è un uccello della famiglia delle Anatidae.
L'Alzavola ha 2 sottospecie:

L'Alzavola è l'anatra più piccola fra quelle europee, con una lunghezza che nel maschio è di circa 36 cm. e nella femmina 33 cm., con un'apertura alare di circa 70 cm. Il peso varia dai 270 ai 400 grammi. Ha corpo abbastanza snello, becco più corto della testa, coda leggermente arrotondata. La colorazione del maschio è variegata e va dal verde delle fascia che circonda l'occhio al marrone rossiccio del resto della faccia. il petto è bianco sporco maculato di macchie nere. Le ali, marrone scuro e grigie, presentano uno specchio alare verde e nero con barra bianca sulle scapolari, macchie giallastre ai lati del sottocoda. La femmina è quasi totalmente bruna, eccetto lo specchio alare verde che è comune al piumaggio del maschio. In entrambi i sessi il becco è di color grigio-nerastro e le zampe sono grigiastre. In volo, visto da sotto, il maschio si riconosce per il caratteristico disegno del capo ed il petto macchiato, mentre la femmina assomiglia a quella del Germano reale, dalla quale si distingue per le minori dimensioni e per la forma più slanciata.
L'abito eclissale del maschio è simile a quello della femmina, ma con parti superiori più scure e uniformi.

Presente in centro Europa. Di passo, nidificante e svernante in Italia. Molto più diffidente di altre specie della stessa famiglia è difficile trovarla nei parchi e nei giardini, ma preferisce acque interne isolate in estate, mentre si disperde nelle acque aperte e lungo le coste in inverno.
Di carattere socievole e confidente, conduce vita gregaria eccetto che durante l'epoca riproduttiva. Possiede un volo agile e rapido in genere piuttosto basso ed è in grado di alzarsi in volo dall'acqua con facilità. Sul terreno cammina poco agevolmente. Come le altre anatre di superficie non si immerge mai completamente nell'acqua quando ricerca il cibo. Si reca in pastura durante la notte.

Si ciba in prevalenza di sostanze vegetali (piante acquatiche, semi, alghe, ecc.), ma pure di insetti e loro larve, crostacei, vermi ed altri piccoli invertebrati.

L'attività riproduttiva comincia, in modo ridotto, già nell'autunno con la formazione di coppie e con l'esibizione soprattutto da parte dei maschi di esibizioni della loro bellezza e di piccole schermaglie con altri maschi, anche se il corteggiamento e le parate più significative iniziano solo in primavera e la nidificazione alla fine di aprile.
In una cavità del terreno ben nascosta tra la vegetazione negli incolti non lontani dall'acqua, in radure di boschi umidi, argini e paludi, la femmina costruisce il nido, su uno strato di densa vegetazione, e durante il periodo riproduttivo lo riempie gradualmente di piume, ove depone mediamente 8-10 uova, che cova per 21-22 giorni. Entrambi i genitori si prendono cura delta prole per circa un mese. Depone una volta all'anno.


Specie migratrice ampiamente distribuita come nidificante in Europa centro-orientale e settentrionale, Asia paleartica. I quartieri di svernamento interessano gran parte dell'Europa occidentale, le Isole Britanniche, l'area mediterranea, l' Africa fino alla Tanzania e alla Nigeria, l'Asia fino all'Equatore.
In Italia è di passo da metà agosto a novembre e in marzo-aprile; sosta inoltre per tutto il periodo invernale. Piccole colonie sono localmente nidificanti in Val Padana. Frequenta soprattutto zone umide d'acqua dolce, densamente coperte da vegetazione. In alcune aree dell'Europa centrale la sua popolazione è fortemente in declino, forse a causa della bonifica di terreni palustri adatti alla sua sopravvivenza.

Ha un rischio minimo rappresentato dalla caccia e dalla bonifica di zone paludose.

La fotografia

Come ho già detto, avendo la possibilità di fotografare le alzavole con frequenza, ho ovviamente centinaia di fotografie di questa specie in vari comportamenti ed aggregazioni, ma la scelta di questa immagine, come mio 300° post su TN, non è tanto legata alla specie quanto al forte impatto emotivo che mi suscita la sua visione, in essa vedo il vigore, la forza, la bellezza, la luce, i contrasti, ........ l'esplosione della Natura, come essenza della vita, che è prima, nonostante e oltre l'Uomo.
Si tratta di una femmina di questa specie, che presenta un marcato dimorfismo sessuale nel periodo riproduttivo rispetto al maschio.
E’ stata scattata da capanno nell’Oasi di Gaggio, dove le alzavole arrivano in autunno in gruppi numerosi per svernare. Questa femmina di alzavola è stato ripresa, quando il sole era molto basso, per cui prevalgono le tonalità calde nei colori e la poca luce disponibile, più che un ostacolo, è diventata il mezzo ideale per ottenere una particolare atmosfera e una forte carica dinamica.

An interesting study of the Teal's Splash: I read only this morning, that the flapping of wings indicates the territory boundary! I add your photo to my theme Animal Behavior.

The excellent focus and depth of field "freeze" the water drops, creating a "curtain" in front of the bird.

Where you in a boat? The animal appears to look straight at you - and I do not think - you were swimming with the terns at this time of the year:)

I like the strong contrast, and the natural colors are a bonus.

La capture du déplacement de l'eau fait par le canard, est un atout à la composition. La prisae de vue permet de voir les détails et les couleurs de la Sarcelle d'hiver. La bonne luminosité fait ressortir les couleurs. Bonne soirée.
