Class: Insecta

Order: Mantodea

Family: Mantidae

Genus: Mantis

Species: M. religiosa

Mantis religiosa, referred to as the European Mantis outside of Europe and known simply as the Praying Mantis in Europe and elsewhere, is one of the most well-known and widespread species of the order, Mantodea. Originating in southern Europe, the European Mantis was introduced to North America in 1899 on a shipment of nursery plants. Now they are found all over the north-eastern United States and Canada to the Pacific Northwest. The European Mantis is usually 5–7.5 cm (2–3 inches) in length, and has shades of bright green to tan. It can be distinguished easily by a black-ringed spot beneath the fore coxae. It is one of several different insects for which a name used within Europe to refer to only a single insect species (in this case, "praying mantis") has become adopted throughout the globe to refer to the larger group of insects to which that one species belongs (e.g., compare "hornet" to European hornet, or "wasp" to Common wasp).

MANTIDE RELIGIOSA

Bonne nuit!
Catherine

Hi My friend Luciano, this is realy perfect example on camouflage! Nicely captured, the mantis is perfectly sharp, with good exposure so that the subtle details on its body are seen. The off-center positioning works well. The crop/framing is a bit tight, but it's not that bad.
TFS and have a nice night/week!
Cheers,

Bayram

Ciao Luciano.

Roberto

At first I thought you were doing a "Heaven" type of image...that is until the lines formed and then it became much clearer. A enigmatic insect in nature and image. While it isn't the first hider I have seen, it falls among the best.
Bob

Grazie e complimenti
Ciao Maurizio

Hi Luciano,

This Mantis is so well camouflaged that I'm surprise you spotted it. I haven't seen even one here this summer so this is a treat for me. Although he blends in so well with his surroundings we see him perfectly because of the good sharp details. The assorted greens are beautiful and make a very artistic picture.

Jane

Hello Luciano,
Now I know why I've never managed to find a Mantis!! Excellent illustration of its ability to hide in the greenery! It's very nicely in focus though with clear details and fine colours. Well composed too!
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Ciao Luciano,

A perfect image of camouflage - showing all the details of the animals great behaviour. You must have been very patient to achieve this perfection! Congratulations!!
I am fascinated by these animals - not least about the terrible behaviour of the females to bite the male's head off while mating!!

Many scientist write this off as óld women's stories'... However, we had in our yard several mantids on a particular windowsill - and every morning - there was underneath on the ground a little pile of heads!

Camouflage is something wonderful and unfortunately - due to the difficulties of focus and exposure - not often shown on this site.

GRazie tante, Luciano

Bonne soiree
Ingrid

As you noted it is really a green on green "situation", Luciano.
Fabulous camouflage by the criket, and well taken by photographer.

Hi Luciano,

Great shot. When I see photos like these I always think of the evolution. Had this insect not elovled to look like its environment we would have not insect at all. And that goes for all of us living things!!

Ciao

Aleks
