Leucojum vernum.

Spring Snowflake (Leucojum vernum) and Summer Snowflake (Leucojum aestivum) are bulbous plants belonging to the Amaryllidaceae family. They are the only species currently classified in the genus Leucojum.The snowflakes are native to southern Europe, from the Pyrenées to Romania and western Russia, but they have been introduced and have naturalized in many other areas, including the east coast of North America. They have narrow, strap-like, dark green leaves. The flowers are small and bell-shaped, white with a green (or occasionally yellow) spot at the end of each petal. They have a slight fragrance.
The Spring Snowflake normally grows 15-20 cm tall (6-8 in), though it may reach up to 35 cm (14 in). It flowers from March to May (as soon as the snow melts in its wild habitat). Two varieties of Leucojum vernum are known: L. vernum var. carpathicum originates from the eastern part of its natural range and is a larger plant with yellowish spots on its petals rather than green; L. vernum var. vagneri from Hungary is a robust plant, often with two flowers per stem.
The Summer Snowflake has a wider natural range, taking in Europe, southwest Asia and northern Iran, and growing in wetter habitats including damp woodland, riversides and swamps. Despite its common name it also flowers from March to May, though slightly later than the Spring Snowflake. It is a taller plant than Leucojum vernum, growing to around 60 cm (2 ft), but its flowers are smaller and are carried in an umbel of between three and seven. Its fleshy seed pods are inflated, allowing them to be dispersed by flood water.

Nome comune: campanellino, campanellini di primavera.
Etimologia: il nome del genere “Leucojum” deriva dalle parole greche “leukòs” , ossia bianco e “ion” ossia "viola" (la pianta), quindi “viola bianca” anche se questa amaryllidacea non ha nulla a che vedere con le viole; il nome della specie “vernum” significa “primaverile”.
Morfologia: Leucojum vernum L. è una geofita bulbosa, il suo bulbo, di forma subsferica (12-30 mm di diametro), è avvolto da tuniche di colore biancastro, il fusto fiorale è compresso, bitagliente, alto dai 15 ai 30 cm; le foglie, che sono tutte basali, sono più brevi del fusto ed hanno una lamina lineare/canalicolata, larga tra i 5 ed i 12 mm e di colore verde scuro (lucida sulla pagina superiore), foglie e fusti fiorali sono avvolti alla base da una guaina di colore bianco traslucido, questa guaina è lunga solitamente dai 3 ai 5 cm ed è strettamente aderente a fusto e foglie;
normalmente il fusto fiorale reca un solo fiore (raramente 2), avvolto alla base da una spata membranosa, questo è pendulo e di forma campanulata, i suoi tepali sono 6, suddivisi in interni (3) ed esterni (3), tutti di lunghezza eguale tra loro (15-22 mm) e di colore bianco candido, con una macchia verde all’apice; il frutto è una capsula loculicida (diametro 16/17 mm), carnosa e di colore verde.
Corologia: si tratta di pianta a corologia Sud Europea, è presente nella Penisola Balcanica, nella Germania centrale e meridionale, sull’arco alpino, in Italia (manca però in gran parte dell’Italia peninsulare), in Francia e nella Spagna nord/orientale .
Diffusione in Italia: in Italia Leucojum vernum L. è spontaneo in tutte le regioni dell’arco alpino e nell’Appennino Settentrionale (dal Savonese al Reggiano), vive anche nella Pianura Padana, nella bassa valle dell’Arno e in altre zone pianeggianti della Toscana nord/occidentale, la presenza di questa graziosa erbacea bulbosa è stata segnalata anche nella Sila cosentina, ma mancano conferme recenti.
Nonostante Leucojum vernum L. formi spesso colonie molto ricche, la sua distribuzione è decisamente discontinua e il suo areale è in fase di contrazione da alcuni decenni, al punto che, in quasi tutte le aree planiziali del Nord e della Toscana, è da considerare specie vulnerabile e a rischio di estinzione, appare molto meno compromessa la situazione delle stazioni montane della catena alpina e dell’Appennino Ligure.
Ecologia: specie indifferente alla composizione chimica del substrato, predilige però suoli piuttosto pesanti, con falda freatica superficiale, per tanto i suoi ambienti di elezione sono i boschi alveali, le rive dei ruscelli, i bordi consolidati di paludi e stagni; tendenzialmente è una specie piuttosto sciafila, che preferisce le zone boscate a quelle aperte.
Antesi: ha inizio solitamente verso la fine del mese di febbraio e termina entro la fine di aprile, a seconda dell’altitudine e dell’esposizione dei versanti essa può essere precoce oppure tardiva, anche l’innevamento è un fattore determinante, poiché, nelle aree montane, l’antesi comincia non appena il suolo inizia ad essere libero dalla neve.
Utilizzo nella medicina popolare ed in Erboristeria: specie velenosa, le sue parti verdi e il bulbo (che ne detiene la massima concentrazione) contengono un alcaloide (la galanthamina), che può indurre avvelenamenti di una certa gravità, le cui manifestazioni estreme vanno dal vomito (è un emetico naturale) a capogiri, brividi, accessi di sudorazione fredda, fino a vere e proprie turbe nello stato di coscienza, quindi ne va evitato l'utilizzo domestico.

What an attractive plant you found growing in this wooded area. Love the low POV and super sharp focus as well as the pleasant lighting. Excellent white balance and beautiful natural colors. Great shot!!
We have had a really hard Winter so far, and it doesn't appear to be ending any time soon. Just yesterday there was a fifty vehicle pile up on the interstate where three people lost their lives.
