Still warm and sunny day in northern Italy, and many species of butterflies are still visible in the fields, something uncommon in mid-November.

VANESSA CARDUI
The Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui) is a well-known colourful butterfly, sometimes known in North America as the Cosmopolitan. It is one of the most widespread of all butterflies, found on every continent except Antarctica. In Australia, V. cardui has a limited range around Bunbury, Fremantle and Rottnest Island. However, its close relative, the Australian Painted Lady (Vanessa kershawi, sometimes considered a subspecies) ranges over half the continent. Other closely related species are the American Painted Lady (Vanessa virginiensis), and the West Coast Lady (Vanessa annabella). The Painted Lady occurs in any temperate zone, including mountains in the tropics. The species is resident only in warmer areas, but migrates in spring, and sometimes again in autumn. For example, it migrates from North Africa and the Mediterranean to Britain in May and June, but offspring produced there die in the Autumn.Painted Lady butterflies are popular for many pre-school and kindergarten classes to raise in schools to demonstrate the life cycle of a butterfly. Painted ladies are very popular with children. They are used in many science fair projects. Several insect distribution companies such as Insect Lore include Painted Lady caterpillars in their catalogue of live insects for ordering. The egg takes 3 to 5 days to hatch. The caterpillar takes 7–11 days to turn into a chrysalis. It takes 7–11 days for the chrysalis to turn into a butterfly. It doesn't stay in one area so long. The painted lady butterfly moves 1000 miles in its life. Its wing span is 2 in. The painted lady caterpillar is black with spiked skin. The caterpillars feed on a wide variety of host plants of the families Asteraceae, especially Carduus crispus (as implied by the species name cardui – Latin for "of the thistles"). Also, Boraginaceae, Malvaceae (especially hollyhocks and dwarf mallow Malva neglecta), and a number of Fabaceae are eaten. The adults drink nectar from a variety of wildflowers and cultivars, more commonly the favored thistle, butterfly bush (Buddleja), asters, Tickseed sunflowers (Bidens) and zinnias.

VANESSA CARDUI

Hello Luciano,
It is rather cold here in Ohio, so the butterflies have pretty much disappeared for the season. I am glad you are still able to show us these beauties form your wonderful country. A great shot of the well known Painted Lady taken from an attractive vantage point. Super sharp detail and rich yet natural colors. Love it!!

Nice shot Luciano.

Have a nice week end.

Same scenario here too, Luciano. I posted a fresh pic taken today and you have seen it.
This image too has a massive appeal for me by virtue of deep blue sky as background. The POV is bold and the Painted Lady looks awesome from it.
Thanks.

Bonsoir Luciano,
Anne

Hi Luciano,
Lovely PoV and exposure. Perfect light management as always - although the color of the flower seems a little incorrect. I don't know why, because the ones on the b-fly are captured excellently. Great color contrast and what's the most important, composition. Pleasant and spectacular image.
Congrats, kind regards, László
