Wildlife and natural history can sadly enough also be the absence of life - thanks to man. This is the river Alzette which runs from northern France through Luxembourg and has done so for centuries. The Alzette valley was so abundant with wildlife that the Count Sigfried built a hunting castle here in 966. That site later became Luxembourg. There are photos from the 1920s of Luxembourg's poor who lived on the river bank in the valley catching their dinner in this river every day. But at some point in the 20th century parts of the river were straigthened, others were led under a neighbouring town, and for the past twenty years the river has been practically dead. Great efforts are being made to bring life back, but it is not easy. And on a day like this it is a bit too quiet since no fish fill the river and attract birds to feed on them. But we live and hope - and in a few years I may be able to post a shot of a trout jumping in this river.

Resized, clarified and sharpened for the web.

A beautiful winters scene.
Nicely captured and I like the still water and the reflections of the trees.
A great note too.
Well done.

This is the story of rivers in the usa too...... The county I lived in, had salmon so deep in the 1950s even, school was let out, and everyone grabbed them going up the river during spawning........ now if 3 fish are sighted, it makes the paper. In India, the ganges still has fish, the people eat them. It is supposed to be 0 oxygen. I see people in Asia all the time fishing in bad water..... maybe the pollution was more gradual, so the fish became accustomed? I do not knw! Nic peaceful picture!

Love this shot. Like the bend in the river and the snow on the shore. Nice serene photo. Give you time to think about what Mankind is doing to His Earth

Not the prettest winter landscape but very effective in showing us what you indended about the poor quality of enviroment, thank you for sharring and informing us about the site and the history of it.
