Hello again!
Today another photo from Macedonia, and another picture from Matka Canyon, but this time something such more smaller ;)

For the first view this mantis species looks like a larva - wings are very short and do not cover entire abdomen. But really it is an adult female of Ameles decolor (Mantidae). Interesting is that males have fully developed wings - they need them to fly and to find females :)

Ameles decolor is one of the only 4 species of Mantodea known from Macedonia (about 40 are known from Europe). The other are: Empusa fasciata (Empusidae), Mantis religiosa, and Iris oratoria (both belong to family Mantidae).

Body size: rather small mantid species, only some 20-30 mm.

Habitat: warm, dry places

Distribution: Albania, Balearic Is., Bosnia & Herzegovina, Croatia, Cyclades Is., France, Italy, Macedonia, Malta, Montenegro, Spain, and Serbia. It is known also from N Africa.

Food: all small invertebrates (insects and spiders) which can be cought. Eating of male by female after or during copulation was not observed in this species, even if general opinion about mantid female as "femme fatale" is well known. Really, such behaviour rather rarely occurs in the nature also in other species of Mantodea, and male usually escapes after "all" :>

As always your critiques and comments are welcomed :>

Hello Radomir,
Nice to see a photo of yours again!
Great capture of this small species of mantid, shown very sharply against a fine BG that is OOF enough to set off the mantid but not to blurred to exclude aview of the habitat. Excellent composition on the rock.
Well done and thanks,

Ciao Radomir,
Ho fotografato in Sicilia l'Ameles spallanzania maschio e femmina.

Great macro! The insect certainly looks very intimidating from your low POV! Good idea.

Hello Radomir,
impressive image of this amazing insect.
+++ The DOF is fabulous and blurs the BG just the right amount so that we can still see the Mantis's habitat.
The sharpness and detail is impeccable.
Very good composition and an effective low-down POV.
I like the grey tones.
--- Nothing :)
Well done,

Czesc Radziu
A to jest dopiero wredna bestia. Podoba mi sie trojwymiarowy efekt stworzony przez tlo Fajna kompozycja i ciekawy punkt widzenia - naprawde wyglada groznie.

Hi Radomir,
This formidable looking Mantis is larger than life in your remarkable macro of the insect.
Excellent sharpness and details. The coloration suggests the insect camouflages itself well in the surroundings.
TFS and also big thank you for looking at my 500th post and writing your kind words on it.

Saludos, JL.

Hello Radomir,
Very fine capture of this Mantis well camouflaged against the lichens on the rock. Excellent sharp details and a fine soft background. Interesting to read your note too!
Many thanks and cheers, Ulla

Hi Radomir, splendid but lethal lady with great details, superb praying pose, very well done, ciao Silvio

You do not post often but when you do it is a worthy image Radomir. This one looks like some sort of desert fighting vehicle! Desert camouflage. Quite the sight. I'll bet some mercenary magazine could use it:-) Whatever it's use, it is sharp and well detailed in notes. A fine addition..

Hi Radomir,
A beautiful capture of this praying mantis nymph. Very nice colors with excellent details and composition. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hi Radek

Nice to see you back my friend :) I was wonderring what you were doing... I hope everything is well with you :)
Great to see this terrific macro from you. It's a species i don't remember seeing, not even in photos, and one explained well by you in your note.
It definitely looks smaller than the one i'm used to, but i can appreciate it's outstanding camouflage. It's absolutely remarkable!
The details of your capture are also great and the DOF is well chosen.
Great work!

Bravo and TFS

WOW!! What a terrible eye-contact! It's almost intimidating. How strange and curious this Mantis, with those brown colors even in the eye. Magnificent focus with great sharpness and splendid details upon a perfectly blurred bg. Excellent POV and composition, dear friend.

Dear Radomir,
You present here very interesting looking of this Ameles decolor. It's very impressive to me. This fella has very big eyes and interesting colours on body comparing with other Family Mantidae.
I can see very nice details and excellent composition here, with nice POV.
Well presented with your informative note as well.
TFS and best wishes,

Hello Radomir,
an exciting document of a dangerously well camouflaged female mantis species new to me. Interesting story - I also thought of seeing a wingless larva. With females unable to fly and highways cutting a grid of barriers into that species's habitat it will have little chance to spread in the future.
What I like so much in this image is the way you show the animal imbedded in landscape.
Thank you! My best regards,

hello Radomir,
I just see that I missed some of your shots. This "femme fatale" is just marvellous and her pose explains well your title. These mantis are really amazing creatures, very fascinating indeed.
Thanks for all your interesting contributions

Hi Radomir,
I did not comment on your Mantid yet. It is another of your entomological gems. As well the species, the quality of the picture and the note are truly exceptional. Thanks for that and for your continued contribution to high quality in TN.
My best regards

Nice shot. The mantis in the foreground with the landscape in the bg looks great. Sharply focussed too. Thanks for sharing.

Pozdravljam Radomir,
very good capture and a good title ;) i have one species of mantid in my album, can you see of course if you want!

Best wishes, Dario

Very wonderful and strange.
