|The red fruits of the Hawthorn enrich the colour of Maltese valleys in Autumn. They are coloured so as to attract birds to eat them. Their seed is swallowed by the bird and its wall is weakened by the acids in the bird's stomach. It then passes unharmed through the alimentary canal of the bird into some fileld where it may sprout and grow.|
