Continuing series of dedications for TN members who sent some pictures to entomological gallery of the PES, today something for Michal
cedryk :)

This is a Saddle-backed bush-cricket (Ephippiger sp.) (Orthoptera: Bradypodidae: Ephippigerinae).

Species belonging to genus Ephippiger are really easy to recognize because of very characteristic saddle-like morphological structure on their backs. Really the English name "saddle-backed bush-crickets" is owed just to this feature.

In Europe members of subfamily Ephippigerinae occur mainly in S parts of continent. This group includes ones of the biggest Orthoptera species - even 5-9 cm.
There are 64 Ephippigerinae cricket spieces in Europe, including 11 species placed in genus Ephippiger, 1 in Baetica, 11 in Ephippigerida, 10 in Platystolus, 1 in Praephippigera, and 30 in Uromenus.

Last day of July 2004. It was my first day in Montenegro. After about 36 hours of trip from Poland to Dubrovnik in Croatia, and additional few from Dubrovnik through Bosnia & Herzegovina to Niksic in Montenegro, we planned to see the famous monastery in Ostrog. This cherch was built in the rocks so we hoped to see really interesting thing :)
It is not a huge distance from Niksic to this place so after about 30 minutes by bus we were there. Well, almost there :>
Really we were on the cross-road, about 8 km from the cherch. It was about 4 p.m.
For the first view the road to monastery looked rather easy and nice - there was an asphalt, only 8 km to go, and we were full of energy - after 2 days of trip finally we were in Crna Gora! :>

But very soon we had to change our opinion...
The road was very good but with rucksacks on our backs and temperature about 30C it was not so "comfortable"... Moreover, the road was raising and raising without the end... ;>
So these "only" 8 kilometers took us about 3 hours while usually normal man can walk about 6km per hour!!! :)

And this picture was taken during this "walk" to the top.

Becuase it was rather late we decided to visit this cherch in the morning and now only to find good place for our camps. We spent this night in old orchard where in the morning we where welcomed by tortoises, snakes, different species of insects and very friendly Montenegrian monks.

Ostrog monastery was our first point of Montenegrian programme. Really from this place we started to discover other nature and historic treasures of this small but amazing country...

Some of my other photos from Montenegro can be found here :)

Hello Radomir,
Fascinating sharp macro of a Saddle-back Bush -cricket. The background is blurred enough to highlight it and clear enough to show something of its habitat and this well-composed shot.
TFS and best wishes, Ivan

This is a great photo! Incredible sharpness and a very good composition. Maybe the background is a bit disturbing but that's a minor complaint.

Thanks for sharing/Bengt

Hi Radomir.
What a perfect shot you have shared. First of all I am impressed with light and perfect detailed BG. I have not seen EXIF data but it is very expressive and to get such effect is not easy. Details and cropping is really super, BRAVO. Great work.

Hola Radomir, buena macro y bella captura, nitidez y compo. perfecta...

Hi Boromir,

Funny creature! I have never seen this one.
The photo has also a very good quality and
the cricket can be well distinguished from
the background. I find the background not
too disturbing. It indicates that
the cricket was in its natural environment
when you photographed it.

Hola Radomir,
Excelente toma de gran nitidez y bella composición, la luz y el fondo son muy agradables. Un cordial saludo
