Spiny starfish - Marthasterias glacialis (Linnaeus, 1758)
Echinodermata

Description: This starfish is large and has five very spiny arms. Each arm bears three longitudinal rows of spike-like spines surrounded by large cushions of pedicellariae. Smaller spines may be scattered between these rows. The spines are white and usually purple-tipped and the animal varies in colour from dirty brown to greenish-grey with purple tips to the arms. Up to 35cm or more in diameter.

Habitat: This species may be found in a very wide range of habitats from sheltered muddy sites to fully exposed rockfaces. Specimens from sheltered sites are usually larger than those from exposed sites.

Key Identification Features:
* Large spines forming three main rows along each arm.
* Spines surrounded by a wreath of pedicellariae.
* Spines usually white with purple tips.

Actually what you can see here are the legs of this remarkable animal. I always wondered how this whole hydraulic motion system works. Just by observing I understood. Here you ma have a glimpse....

This is a fabulous image! And very interesting from a biological point of view. It is very difficult to photograph moist, slimy objects without a lot of nasty reflections and burn-out. Here you have succeeded very well. More info as to where and how you took this image would add to your very good note.

Great impact, cool shot Michal. I like the orange color and transparent tentacles seen so well. Sharp detail - Excellent closeup!

Hi Michal.
I like very much this one.
It looks great, I can see the textures perfectly, beautiful transparencies, colours and looks very natural and moody.
If you did not crop very much and still have resolution a close up would be great for another post.
Thanks for posting and for the useful info.

Hi Michal,
An outstanding macro! The colors in this are really superb. The detail is excellent. Very interesting, and very well done.

Czesc Michale!

Great colours and sharpness. However I'm would be afraid to get such close-up of such dangerous species :-)
Best wishes,

Very interesting close-up!

Sharpness and exposure are excellent. It's a chance that you mention it's a starfish, because that close it could be a lot of different subjects. But as you title suggest, the stickiness is very well represented.
Good job and TFS.

Hi Michal, what an interesting subject, where did you get it? The colours, bg, focusing and composition are all perfect.
Congratulations,
Ersin

Hi Michal,
Perfect composition, much like a still life. Marvellous colour contrast, the intense orange colour contrasting with deep blue bg. Yes, these starfishes are fascinating. I am particularly impressed how they can change from bilateral symmetry in their larval form into fivefold symmetry in adults. Does the future of all life forms reside in higher symmetry ? And then it's so fascinating to see how they crawl around in time lapse documentation.
TFS, Patrick

Hello Cedryk,
Beautiful photo of a "rare thing", had not imagined to me that they could exist. The details and colors are majestic. Pretty composition and excellent note.
