[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Adult bee flies become active about the third week of April here in Europe and in the American midwest. They are extremely agile and quick fliers, very wary and difficult to approach. They rarely actually alight on a flower, preferring instead to hover just above, while lowering their proboscis for nectar. The larval stages live as parasites in the nests of solitary bees (e.g., Andrena, Halictus and Colletes species), where they eat the food stores and grubs of their host. The female bee fly in the bottom photo is laying eggs in the dirt by rapidly vibrating her butt, thereby digging a hole for egg placement.
I love these little guys, the way they whip about. The Japanese call them biroudu tsuriabu. Cool. Adult bee flies become active about the third week of April here in the American midwest. An amazing macro shot, your new camera is very impressive!
Amazing detail, and a very scary looking fly.
A great shot, well done and thanks for sharing.

Very good macro Jaap.
I took some pictureof a insect today and it looks like this one. But it was a friendly ,Bee-Fly, Bombylius major.
Good details, compostion and colours.
Well done, my friend.

Hallo Jaap!
I love your fluffy insect ;-) Great macro, wonderful details and just perfect note!

Hi Jaap!
I dont know what this is, but I would be afraid of it. Your usual nice quality is shown here again. Regards.

Very nice close up of this Bombylius sp. probably major as "ellis49' suggests. It is perfectly harmless, unless you are a solitary bee grub. The longue tongue is used exclusively to sap nectar, nothing like a horse fly here!
Very well done

I got my Rainbow on Friday. Then took a few pictures of it and gave it away. What did you fish for?
No deer flies or balck flies out yet, soon though.
Excelent capture of this fly. Well done on the composition and details.

Hi Jaap
Mooi foto, goeie details. Knap gedaan.

Very well done and thanks for posting

Great capture of this Bombulus major Jaap. Very good dof to show the details in the wing and the "fur". Colours are spot on. Pity the left wing dropped totally out of focus - but you cann't have it all;-).

Hello Jaap, very nice shot. I'm with Gert regarding the ID. I saw one of these yesterday and although I got a couple of shots they weren't as good as this. Very nice capture. Good shot.

Great shot!
Perfect focus and details. Very good composition and POV. Maybe just frame a bit to tight, but still almost perfect.
I like it very much.
Very well done!

Goedemorgen Jaap,
Groeten,
John.

Wonderful macro shot,
I liked the composition,DOF and details!
