I have uploaded this picture because I like it a lot. I took this picture in Dierenpark Amersfoort (a Zoo) and this Baboon reminded me of Donkey Kong. A little Baboon running around looked like his son: Donkey Kong junior. I am a huge fan / collector of the old Nintendo Game & Watch handheld games from the 19-eighties and I collect original Nintendo handhelds from that period, especially Donkey Kong games in the box. Check out my website: http://www.xs4all.nl/~sane It's big business nowadays; I recently paid 315 euros for the US version of Donkey Kong jr. in box with instructions. The game is dated 1982. :) Anyway, because this baboon reminded me of Donkey Kong, I liked it and uploaded it.

General information:

Hamadryas Baboon (Papio hamadryas)

Hamadryas baboons have a fluffy coat. Females and young baboons are brown, while adult males have a silver hair on their shoulders and back. Their faces and rump have pink skin with no hair.

The Hamadryas baboon lives in Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia, Somalia and Yemen. It prefers the rocky desert areas and the subdesert regions that have grass.

The Hamadryas baboon has a complex social structure. A male will dominate up to 10 females at a time. This family is a close-knit group, interacting with each other far more frequently than with baboons from other families. Several families form a clan; several clans form a band; several bands form a troop. Males will forcefully steal females from other bands, but will not steal from their own family. Instead, they very gradually win over a juvenile female without confrontation. Young males inherit females from their father. Thus the father's social status is passed on to his sons. Females are much smaller than males, so they are not as forceful. However, if a female does not favor her male, she will have a much higher chance of being "stolen" from her male.

Now please hit me with your fierce criticism! Be honest as I can handle constructive criticism. I want to learn something here!

Hij heeft een prachtige kop Pieter,
goed genomen foto, de details zijn goed duidelijk, de haren zijn te tellen, hele goede compositie, prachtige kleuren.Goed werk

I like his pose, he is very lazy.
Very good details and POV.
The head is a bit burn but it's still ok.
IMHO, the BG is very distracting.

Excellent note, thank you!

Nice capture Pieter,
I've got the donkey kong tune in my head now!
You've captured the detail well, he looks deep in thought (probably planning his next barrel jumping adventure)
Thanks for posting

Very good picture with very good light, the exposure on its face is OK, you almost burned its fair but you managed to get good exposure. Very good composition, I think that you did too much sharpening.

Hey Pieter, we had 2 old Donkey Kong games lying around the house for years - I think I finally threw them out. My sons loved the games as children. Their first 'handheld games' ever.
Looks like monkey's perm went wrong in the Salon. Wonderful pose and expressions. Good catch. Interesting notes. TFS

Very clear image and good note too.

He looks like an old man who's just come out of the hairdressers' and is waiting for someone. Like his pose with the knee up. Great shot.

I love this photo and you know why, Pieter. But I hadbetter critique it properly....Composition could be better, should have been from the front. DOF would have been better shorter. Great sharpness in the fur detail, though.

A nice capture.
A very good pose and composition.
The light looks to be very strong but you've handled that very well.
A good informative note too.
Well done.

Pieter, I like the expression that you've captured in this one. Very good sharpness/detail also. Well done!

Pieter, a funny, sharpened and well composed shot. Congratulations.

Great pov and dof too.

Pieter, A very nice shot of this baboon. I really like the side pose with the way he is sitting, and can see why you wanted that shot. I agree that the large rock behind his head is the only distraction. many times you are so intent on you subject, you don't think to much about the backround. I have looked at many shots of mine and said where did that object come from? Still a nice shot!

Hi Pieter!
Great picture, excellent quality but your story is even better! I like old games very much! I have got emulators of gameboy, nintendo, atari, c64 and zx spectrum [yes, zx was my first and most beloved computer ;-)] on my nokia n-gage mobile. Also love to play from time to time on PC with help of MAME. Mostly I like games from old Capcom CPS1 arcade system.

Hallo Pieter!
Very fluffy Donkey Kong :-))))
Funny and nice picture. Thanks!

Well done on this capture. The focus is good and so are the details.
The rock at the head is distracting and the face is just a wee bit overexposed.
Excelent view.

Ce singe profite bien de soleil. Cette prise de vue est très expressive.
J'aime bien l'atmosphère qui se dégage de cette photo.
Son nez commence à rougir, attention au coup de soleil!

Nice shot, good pose and nice details.
Well done.

Have no criticism to add to this photo. I enjoy the composition and detail very much. A person viewing this capture must surely wonder what is going on in the mind of such a creature? Thank you.

Hi Saner, How are you?
This is a beautiful monkey kind.
Nice composition...good work
