The Oleander Hawk-moth Daphnis nerii is a hawk-moth found in South Europe, in the Tropics and Subtropics of Africa and Asia but also in East Europe and in the North of the Alps as a guest.


De oleanderpijlstaart (Daphnis nerii) is een nachtvlinder uit de familie Sphingidae, de pijlstaartvlinders.

De grote oleanderpijlstaart heeft een spanwijdte van 8 tot 12 centimeter. Hij valt op door zijn groene en roze strepen en vlekken, hier en daar een paarse. Hij komt voor in bijna heel Afrika en het zuidoostelijke deel van Azië. Soms wordt de mooie vlinder als trekvlinder in Europa waargenomen.

De tot 10 centimeter lange rups is groen, bruin, geelbruin, geel of lichtblauw met een witte streep over het lichaam en een geel slaphangend stekeltje. Op zijn 'nek' zit een witte oogvlek, met een zwarte en een blauwe rand. Hij leeft van oleander en maagdenpalm (vinca).

De oranjebruine cocon is lang en slank, met een zwarte 'scheiding' tussen de vleugeldelen. Op zijn zijkant heeft hij zwarte vlekken.


Der Oleanderschwärmer (Daphnis nerii) ist Schmetterling (Nachtfalter) der Familie der Schwärmer (Sphingidae).

Beschreibung:
Die Falter erreichen eine Flügelspannweite von 90 bis 130 Millimetern. Sie haben eine von dunkelgrün und olivgrün dominierte Musterung, die sich auf die Flügel und auch auf den Körper erstreckt. Dabei werden dunkelgrün nach hellgrün verlaufende Bereiche durch helle, geschwungene Linien abgetrennt. Zwischen erstem und zweitem Flügeldrittel findet sich je ein rosa Fleck und nahe am Rand der Flügelinnenseite in der hinteren Hälfte der Flügel je ein weiterer graublauer, der nach außen schwarz umrandet ist.

Die Raupen erreichen eine länge von 120 Millimetern. Sie sind blaugrün, gelbgrün oder seltener rosa oder ockergelb gefärbt. Sie haben einen weißen Seitenstreifen, der nach unten hin hellblau gesäumt ist, und um das zahlreiche weiße Punkte angeordnet sind. Am dritten Segment sind zwei auffällige blau und innen weiß gefärbte Augenflecken zu finden, die dick schwarz umrandet sind. Am hinteren Ende des Abdomens sitzt das gelbe, gebogene Analhorn, der aber keine Funktion hat. Dieser ist bei jungen Raupen dunkel und verhältnismäßig länger als bei älteren Tieren.

Die ca. 50 Millimeter lange Puppe ist hellbraun und zeigt Atemöffnungen (Stigmen) mit schwarzem Rand.

Wow, This Camouflage is really special and unique! Not only does it prevent predators, it's a beautiful design by itself.
