Last time I’m trying to make better photos of flying birds.
In a bird-show in Rotterdam I saw one of my favourite birds of Africa, the Lilac-breasted Roller (Coracias caudata). He was flying very low and I couldn’t avoid the fence in the background.

Identification: The roller is 41 cm. with tail streamers. Upperparts tawny-brown or greenish-brown; rump and wing coverts ultramarine blue; throat and breast rich lilac; remainder underparts greenish-blue.
In the Somali race of this roller, which also occurs in north-east Kenya, the lilac is reduced, being confined to a patch on the troath and foreneck. Species easily recogniced by combination of lilac chest and long tail streamers. Often seen perched on telegraph poles and wires. In some lights wings show brilliant blue and black in flight.
Voice: A serie of harsh chattering notes.
Distribution and habitat: Local resident and partial intra-African migrant ranging from Somalia and Ethiopia through East and Central Africa.
It occurs in woodlands, open bush country especially where there are isolated trees to serve as vantage points, and even open plains if there are telegraph poles or fences on witch it can perch.

Hi Peter,

Great in-flight of this Roller. You caught him perfectly. Love the head on position! The face is marvelous - even the eyes. Beautiful colors and fine details. He stands out from the fence very well.

Hi Peter,
a very good action shot. The lack of sharpness at the wingtips and the very good sharpness at the head introduce an element of dynamics. The perfect split-second! I understand why this is your preferred bird!
Thanks and kind regards,
Dietrich

Hello Peter,

I don't think the fence detracts fom this lovely action shot! Very good focus and beautiful colours! Interesting notes too!

kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Peter,
A very impressive shot, not only for the action but also for the technical quality and for the colourful subject. You have captured it in a great position, showing the wonderful colour of the upper wing-side. Great focus, well chosen DOF. Simply fantastic.
Best greetings & TFS!

Hallo Peter,

Paul

Hallo Peter

Thanks for welcoming me to Trek Nature. I appreciate your visit and the positive critique you left me. I am sure I’ll enjoy every moment and that my knowledge about nature and everything involved will grow daily.
Although this is not your latest posting, I wanted to critique this specific one. On browsing through your portfolio, my eye caught this Lilac Breasted Roller in flight and I immediately thought back to my reaction to the first time I ever saw this bird. I cannot recall my exact words but it was something in the line of “Look at that big beautiful blue butterfly” How was I supposed to know birds can be as gorgeous and colourful as butterflies? Up to today, I am often teased about this, and whenever we go out to a game reserve or bird park and see some of these birds, Loot or the children will refer to it as “Anna’s butterfly.”
I agree that we do have a beautiful country with lovely landscapes and tremendous fauna and flora.

Kind regards
Anna
