Libellula depressa

Last picture of this series (for the moment :-) ). Once you have begon to take picture of odonata, you get addicted :-) !

This one was almost ready to fly.

Information from the BRC site (www.brc.ac.uk/schemes/broad_bodied_chaser_survey/facts.htm)

Habitat

The Broad-bodied Chaser tends to be found by ponds and shallow lake margins. They are rarely found in rivers and canals.

Life cycle

Mating is very brief and usually takes place in the air, lasting only a few seconds. The female will then lay her eggs by dabbing the tip of her abdomen at the surface of the water, while the male guards her by hovering close by. The eggs hatch after a couple of weeks and the dull brown, hairy larva (or nymph) will live underwater for 1-3 years. When fully grown, the larva will climb out of the water onto a leaf or twig and the beautiful winged adult will emerge from the dull larval case. As adults, they only live for about a month, at most.

Detail of the case and the head of the dragonfly in the WS. This time the flash was used.

Hallo Marie Christine,

Groeten,
Niek

zeer speciale foto Marie,
groet Jaap

Hello Marie,
Great capture of a brief moment in time. Excellent macro with sharpness, POV and exposure being spot on. Good use of flash for highlight on the Chaser's torso. Nicely Done! TFS Thomas

A very timely shot, Marie. It is the record of a crucial moment when the young dragonfly emerges out of the chrysalis and looks so tender and fresh.
The image is very sharp and colourful.
I see you have a spate of these Chasers around you.
TFS and regards.
Ram

very nice
thank you

Splendido momento di cattura, eccellente POV, molto bella la composizione, ottima nitidezza, belli i colori. Eccellente anche l'immagine in WS. Grazie e complimenti. Ciao Maurizio

A perfect moment captured expertly on the life history of this d.fly Marie, almost a miracle, seeing the size of the chrysalis exuvium just abandoned. You've framed a good educational content here my friend!
