The third photo of a Black-tailed Godwit in flight.

The Black-tailed Godwit, Limosa limosa, is a large shorebird. It is a relatively long-legged member of the godwit genus.

I've given a lot of information at the other two photo’s about this bird, but maybe here is something new. Collected from internet sides.

Did you know?

In 2004, scientists at the University of East Anglia revealed that black-tailed godwits were monogamous, they spend their winters about 600 miles apart, but meet to breed with the same partner each year. Relationships can last up to 25 years.

The rare Black-tailed Godwit is similar to the Bar-tailed and Hudsonian Godwits but has a straighter bill. They are easiest to tell apart in flight. The black wing linings of the Hudsonian Godwit are diagnostic. The Bar-tailed lacks a wing stripe and has a white rump patch extending up the back. The Marbled Godwit is larger with buffy underparts. In flight, the Marbled Godwit has plain wings and a dark rump. Dowitchers also have long bills and feed in a similar manner but are smaller with uniform, not pink and dark, bills.

The limosa family:
*Limosa fedoa:
Limosa fedoa beringiae
Limosa fedoa fedoa
*Limosa gypsorum - fossil
*Limosa haemastica
*Limosa lapponica:
Limosa lapponica anadyrensis
Limosa lapponica baueri ssp.
Limosa lapponica lapponica
Limosa lapponica menzbieri
Limosa lapponica taymyrensis
*Limosa limosa:
Limosa limosa islandica
Limosa limosa limosa
Limosa limosa melanuroides

Hi Peter,

How wonderful to get an in-flight shot with such expression on the bird's face! He looks angry and seems to be shouting at someone. Love it! Legs and wings are in wonderful positions. Excellent colors, details, and composition.

hello Peter

superb in-flight shot of the Black-tailed Godwit, very fine POV
the bird from above showing the excellent sharpness
and details of his plumage, i love the way the bird is framed on the image,

Hello Peter,

Excellent picture of this godwit. Good composition. Excellent POV and sharpness. The light is perhaps a little bit to strong. I would have reduced the gamma which would have helped to reinforce the colours. But that is only post-processing. The shot itself is excellent.

Hi Peter , a nice in-flight shot , good detail but a bit harsh on the lighting , I am a bit curious on the camera settings ? I can understand the ISO200 to boost speed a bit , but the f/11 seems to work against that.

well I have posted photo's with down right crazy F/#'s , I just noticed that and was a bit curious...

it's a good action shot anyways , TFS

Hi Peter,

Good in-flight shot with lots of feather detail and a nice pose from the bird. Technically great and a very interesting note.

Hello Peter superb flight pic excellent sharpness and detail well caught with the open beak. Rgds Necip

Hi Peter,

You could not ask for a more perfect time to press the shutter button. The open bill adds a very nice touch to this shot. In-flights are never easy, especially on birds that are not as common. You've done wonderfully here. Wonderfully done with excellent note. Great work. TFS.
