[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The next photo in line of my day at Aekingerzand is of course a sunset. No matter what you do, at the end of the day the sun will always set.

I came to this spot about half an hour before the sun would set and used some of the time to make some photos with the floodlight of the last rays. A few minutes before the actual sunset I started to set up my composition by taking an small guess on the trajectory of the sun and the options I had to move the tripod. It pretty much came down to this spot because it had a good combination of foregrond element, a nice touch on the reflection of the sky on the ice and water and the position of the sun between two trees.

My goal was to place the horizon in the center of the photo so to utilize the mirroring effect to the fullest. Most of the light in this photo is on the left side of the composition, so I had to position my grad ND in an angled position. This did cause me to lose some details in the far left landscape. but did allow for the best exposure balance.

Hi Niek

This is what i've been waiting to see...the glorious sunset from that lovely day out!
And my wait was worth it...it's stunning!
You "guessed" well where the sun would touch the horizon and therefore your composition is wonderful: the splendid sky and its reflection take the most of the frame but still leave out room for the beautiful tree silhouettes and the FG reeds. Surely, the nice curve of the water acts as a lead-in line very nicely, too.
I perfectly understand you having to tilt the grad filter...i do that sometimes, too. By the way, which grad filter did you use here? 0.6 or 0.9?
Anyway, the result is impeccable! The tones and soft transition from one color to another in both the sky and the reflection are brilliant and complete this superb presentation.

Wow, this is so beautiful - the kind of picture I would like to print and hang on my wall, if it was mine. Composition and POV are perfect, you made the best choices possible. And such a wonderful palette of colors, ranging frome pale yellow to dark blue, and those beautiful clouds, and I also like the mood and the atmsophere of this picture. Very well done !

Een prachtige foto. Mooi scherp en fijn van kleur en compositie. De reflectie van de bomen aan de rand in het water/op het ijs komen goed tot z'n recht. Je POV is uitstekend uitgerekend. Timing kan niet beter. Het resultaat mag er dan ook wel zijn.

Oh... this is "yummy" Niek. Yes, the sun will will always set, but not always with such a grand display. I love the dark curve and of course that gorgeous light and the way it shimmers on the ice. I think another thing that works FOR this very effective composition is that the orange, bright reflection part connects visually with the bright sky leaving the bottom third of the image darker and the upper two thirds brighter. Lovely work...

Hi Niek

I quite fancy this dark moody image of the sunset over Aekingerzand. I just had to chuckle at the simplistic and utter truth captured in your words, "No matter what you do, at the end of the day the sun will always set". It reminded me of the words in a Bob Dylan song "It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)" saying, "He not busy being born is busy dying" (also very true).

In your notes you have already adequately addressed all the aspects concerning the composition, and the colours and details are great.

You obviously put a lot of thought into your compositions (unlike me!) and this certainly shows. You caught the light perfectly and had some wonderful tree silhouettes and reflections as well. I love the colours of this wintery light.

I love the simplicity of this composition. Pure, clean and peaceful with sense of solitude. The sunset light is magical, very beautiful and soft colors, the cloud is wonderfully spreading across the sky, the reflection in the lake is a plus. Beautiful like a painting. Thanks.

Thought I would come by and see what everyone had been doing and found this.

I know it is some time since you have posted it, but I really like it. It is just so very much 'my' type of shot and I am a sucker for sunsets and sunrises...

Great composition leading to the right. From my point of view it works really well and the patches of unfrozen water add that little extra to the picture. Colours are excellent.
