The White Pelican, Pelecanus onocrotalus, also known as the Eastern White Pelican or Great White Pelican is a bird in the pelican family. It breeds from southeastern Europe through Asia and in Africa in swamps and shallow lakes. The tree nest is a crude heap of vegetation.

This is a large pelican, at a mass of 10 kg, 160 cm long and with a 280 cm wingspan. It differs from the Dalmatian Pelican, the only larger species of pelican, by its pure white, rather than greyish-white, plumage, a bare pink facial patch around the eye and pinkish legs. Males are larger than females, and have a long beak that grows in a downwards arc, as opposed to the shorter, straighter beak of the female. Immature birds are grey and have dark flight feathers.

More than 50% of White Pelicans breed in the Danube Delta. This pelican migrates short distances, wintering in northeast Africa. In flight, it is an elegant soaring bird, with the head held close to and aligned with the body by a downward bend in the neck.
Pelicans catch fish in their huge bill pouches, most, like this species, while swimming at the surface.
Like the Dalmatian Pelican, this species has declined greatly through habitat loss and persecution.

The White Pelican is one of the species to which the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) applies.

This is the closest one can have to a of macro of a Pelican!
The details of the eye and base of the bill are fantastic and taken with excellent sharpness, colours and lighting. The blue colour of the bill is amazing I didn't know that it was so striking in the Great White Pelican.
You are a teacher and now you have taught me something!

Very good close-up, see the pelican from it POV makes we appreciate it differently. Most notable is the complexity of colors and interesting relief of the bird's face. It's very interesting, it makes good crop and composition. Good note attached.

Dear Peter!

Your picture merits the little green asterix for a favourite picture. It simply is superb, surprising at the same time because of the richness of the details and the point of view. I never have been looking so closely into the face of a Pelikan and I like the effect very much. Moreover, the colours are magnificent!

How close can one get? A great photo filled with a beautiful assortment of colours and clarity of finer details. A wonderful composition with the exposure done beautifully, and the light used well to bring out this White Pelican's features to there best. The colours in the image are complementing each other nicely. The catch-light caught in the eye gets a definite plus. The details are really super. Things like the red in the side of the eye and the green leave above the bird's head caught my eye. An excellent photograph, presented in a lovely manner. Kind regards
