[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The Drone Flies below can be seen in everybody's garden in summer. Larvae of the Drone Fly are very remarkable. They live in stale and very polluted water with almost no oxygen. As a solution to this problem they developed a very long tube on the backside of the body. This tube is put out of the water like a kind of a periscope and is used to breath through. This tube is probably the reason why in Dutch they are called Rat's Tail Larvae. The Drone Fly does look like a common Honey Bee indeed. It is more robust, shiny and a little darker though. The two animals are also easily told apart by the eyes: Drone Flies have very large eyes, typical of flies. Drone Flies make up the infamous genus of Eristalis. Infamous for this genus is comprised of some 15 species. These species are real look-a-likes and very hard to tell apart. The females are even harder to identify for not only are they extremely variable, they often also lack the orange spots commonly found in males. Below two very common species: Eristalis tenax and Eristalis pertinax. The difference between the two species is the last part of the leg, just above the foot: in E. tenax it is always black and in E. pertinax it is always yellow.

Often I prefer to see all the insect, but here because of the shallow DOF we could see only the head of the Drone Fly and in fact I like it ;-) Thanks for sharing Jaap.

Hi Jaap,
Although the DOF is shallow here, it works well. The colors are really nice, and the detail on the fly's head is sharp. Interesting and informative notes too.

Nice & sharp, good composition.

I would have maybe used more depth (f/11 or f/16). Also there's a bit too much light on the bottom, you loose some details.

Hi Jaap,
Very nice close-up!
Great colour, very good POV.

Hi Jaap,

Excellent shot and well done on the composition. Excellent POV.
Too bad the point and shoot couldn't go up to F14.
Super work.

Hello Jaap,
a wonderful view of this fly. The face and the big eyes have excellent sharpness. I also like the softly background, nothing is disturbing from these pretty eyes.
I'm a little sad that all the insects are going to die now, it was my great passion these year to look and learn from them.
I hope, everybody has some shots in the archive so that we sometimes can look at them in winter. Bye, have a nice evening

Hi Jaap.
This is a good shot, though it appears slightly out of focus. Still, it is pretty incredible, and a job well done.
All the best of the day! John

I very much like how you have constructed this shot, Jaap.

Sometimes the shallow DOF works very well to enhance the photo, which IMHO, is the case here.

Well done and TFS.

Face to face with Jaap ;-) Excellent POV. Very detailed macro with good sharpness. Interesting subject. DOF is slightly short but we, owners of compacts, know that f8 is our max :-)

Nice shot Jaap!
Photo looks superb, has good details and light.
The DOF may seem to be too shallow, but I think it looks very good here and gives nice depth.
Overall, very interesting post.

Hi Jaap,

Dit is dichtbij zeg! De ogen zijn prachtig, maar ik zou wel een hogere f hebben geprobeerd. DOF is a little shallow. Composition and POV are very good. Well done & TFS!

Mooi vastgelegd Jaap.
Ik vind dat kleine brilletje altijd zo leuk bij ze.
Nog even en we mogen onze macro lensjes weer wegstoppen.
groetjes he

Jaap, this is indeed very nice.

Focus is perfect where it has to be - on the head/eyes.

Excellent sharpness and lovely background.

Some overexposure on the bottom of the picture, but that's a minor nit.

Personal assessment of the photo: very good.
Strong visual impact.
Aptness of the photo for the site: excellent.
Personal assessment of the note: complete.
Thank you Jaap.

This is a good macro, Jaap.
It's sharp where it counts, the DOF is always shallow in these close-ups even if you use a DSLR with F22.
Well composed, good POV and nice colours.
Well done, my friend.
