Today Im eight years on TN. Therefore a choice of posting for the bird which is so characteristic for the place where I live, the Black-tailed Godwit, limosa limosa.

While in the Netherlands the trend of numbers of Godwits is declining, the population remains stable in The Green Heart, the area where I live, or even is increasing slightly in some areas.

Cooperation with farmers
So Forestry The Green Heart does cooperate with farmers to become pasture management to measure. By late mowing the young Godwits in the tall grass find enough shelter and food. This leads to success. The Netherlands has an international responsibility for this species. By creating the right conditions for breeding Godwits and chicks in more places, the declining can be stopped.

The decline in meadow birds began before 1990, largely because of the intensification of agriculture. For this reason, sweeping measures were introduced to protect meadow birds, especially in the 1990s. They included protecting the nests, modifying the mowing strategy and designating reserves. Despite this, the decline continues. The reason that the decrease has been greater in the north than in the south of the country is probably the more intensive grassland use.

The Black-tailed Godwit is on the Red List of birds. The more than 25 percent decline in the Black-tailed Godwit has international significance, as over half the European breeding population of this species is found in the Netherlands.

Size: 36-44 centimeters; 62-70 centimeters wingspan
Color (adults):
long dark legs, long orange-based dark-tipped bill, orange head, neck and chest during breeding season; black and white wingbar and white rump visible in flight
invertebrates (such as insects, worms and molluscs); aquatic plants during migration
Dutch status:
nesting bird, migratory
fens, lake edges, damp meadows, moorlands; mud flats during migration
4 eggs, 2 years
Life span:
4 years; maximum known age: +23 years
Special nature:
its silhouette in flight is rather unique with its long beak, fanned tail and legs extending beyond
Winter home:
West-African marshes and rice fields
Protected by:
Monitoring: Network Ecological Monitoring, Red List
Dutch Policy: Species Target List
National legislation: Flora and Fauna Regulation
European Agreement: Bird Directive
International: Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA), Bern Convention, Bonn Convention

Eight years on Treknature, but Im not happy with the situation on this moment here. There are only a few active members left. Over 200 active members are gone for several reasons. I think I will be the next one. Or Ill be back only now and then. Maybe till better times. Thanks for all your appreciation.

Hello Peter,
Congratulations for being 8 years on TN, actually I have beaten you for some months:-)
Interesting bird from the red list, elegant apparition with this amazing long beak. Fine natural presentation and good note as usual. Good to know that something is done to preserve the species.
Kind regards

Hello Peter,
congratulations on completeing 8 yars. I am glad I returned on the right moment to share with you this happy moment. What you wrote is true. I was also one to take a long break from TN. But I will tell you onething. There is nothing like TN and nothing like the camaraderie and mutual respect and encouragement we shared here. I am back for good and hope you will also stick around as my dear friend your pictures have always been marvellous!!!
Thanks for the share,

Hello Peter - Congratulation for your 8 years here in Trek Nature. Hope we will see you in future also, but not as migratory bird. Beautiful picture of this Red listed Black- tailed Godwit. I like BG very much. Nice colour and very close view of this species. I don't think TN has lost its members, which you have mentioned. They are watching picture everyday, just not commenting or posting picture. If you notice any of your picture after 2/3 days of posting, you could see that viewers are 150-200. A comment is the source of inspiration to continue, but personally, now I use TN to improve my work with the help of a very few Honest critique. You are one of them who has been helping me and I would like to see you in future too. Thanks for such beautiful picture with useful NOTE. Regards - Srikumar
