From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:
The Black Swan (Cygnus atratus) is an Australian waterbird and the official state bird of Western Australia
Black Swan was adopted as the name for a class of sloops built by the United Kingdom during World War II.
This bird is a member of the duck, goose, and swan family Anatidae.
Black swans are found in all states of Australia. Prior to the arrival of the Māori a sub-species, the New Zealand Swan used to live in New Zealand. This was hunted to extinction, more recently though both introductions by Europeans and probable natural migration they are established again in New Zealand. The adult bird weighs up to 20 lb (9 kg). Unlike many other waterbirds, black swans are not migratory; they spend their entire life in the area where they were hatched.
Black Swans nest on large mounds that they build in the middle of a shallow lake. They reuse the same nest each year, restoring or rebuilding it as needed. Male and female swans share the care of the nest, and once the cygnets are fledged, it is not uncommon to see whole families looking for food. They are Protected under the National Parks and Wildlife Act, 1974.

Nice detail all around with well rendered colours.

I like the contrast with black and red. well done

Very nice close-up/portrait Vivian. The colours on the bird are very good as well as the sharpness/dof. There are lots of details in the plumage. The composition however could have been better. You don't really get full advantage of the curved lines in the picture because of the cropping with the bird in centre of the picture. I think it would be more interesting if there were a little more space in front of the swan. So I dared to make a WS to show what I mean. I hope it is OK.
