Polyommatus icarus
The blue one lives in poor grass countries. There where is a short vegetation and there must be open spots. In this must then some plants occur. It go's me to far to look for the names of those plants.

The blue one can be easily confused with the brown blue one. Of the differences is see in the white edging. At the brown blue one the wing veins run by as a result of which seem the edging crammed. More over the female has icarus no complete file edging dots. On the base being lacking carrot macula of the characteristics brown of blue.

The butterfly can occur in two generations, flying from May to October. The male has two possibilities of demolishing a female: somewhere for a high spot with open wings wait, or go in search. After a short s- flight the pair is looking for a spot to pair in vegetation.

The white eggs are generally turned off on the base of the host plants. At the first stage the caterpillar eat of the fabric of the booklet(are there then eating canals visible), later the caterpillar eat of the complete booklet and sometimes they have a visit by ants. The transformation from caterpillar in till butterfly take place on the ground under the host plant, but the cocoons are sometimes taken by ants.They are unlucky. As soon as the small caterpillar has crawled from the egg, it can start with its most important function start, namely, eat and grow. The length of this increase stage differs by type. The caterpillars of most of the types are herbivores and grow very fast.

Within 2 or 3 weeks they are 20 times so long, and 2000 till 3000 times so heavy as they where before. Even the most elastic skin cannot endure such an enormous increase. The caterpillar peels thus a number of times. The body of the caterpillar exists from 13 segments. To the three first body parts behind the head, sit each time 2 udder legs. With those legs, the caterpillar holds its food fast. More to the back sits 5 couples of course legs. This are exactly small suction cups, with that the caterpillar can hold himself to the plant. The caterpillars of the second generation wintered till they come next spring out of there headstock.

This butterfly is almost on thed end of his life. You can see it there is a pieche of his wing broken. I must say this blue ones are my personal favourites with the orange tip butterflies. I hope you like the shot. I am happy to be back.

Jaap, you are a very welcome face at this site and it is a great Xmas present to have you back.

This butterfly is old but it is still beautiful! As we grow older we all have scars to show but few of us retain that inner beauty.

The DOF and color in this shot is excellent and I really like the composition.

Nice to see you're back with us, Jaap. Very good butterfly macro, where the typical soft blue color and velvet texture is very well conveyed. We only have few of these (Argus Bleu, Azuré de la Bugrane) in the dryest parts of our hills. I like your composition here, as well as the very comprehensive note. Well done... and I hope more of your's in 2005!

Good welcome back Image Jaap, saw this 1st think this morning but no time to comment, you seem to have recieved a great ovation on your return this is good.
the metalics are very well seen in the upper wings.
the missing piece is only from not being fast enough away from a bird trying to eat it, and when it was grabbed it flew off leaving a small piece in the birds beak. I have seen butterflies with atleast 50% of the wing area missing and still able to fly resonabley well.
keep them comming, I expect we will see some of your older posts. ;0))))#

Jaap, the title of your photo reminded of the song "Father and Son", by Cat Stevens. It goes "I am old, but I'm happy".
