Blue Emperor - Anax imperator (male)

Large and powerful, averaging 78 mm in length.
Males have a sky blue abdomen marked with a diagnostic black dorsal stripe and an apple green thorax.
Females have a green thorax and abdomen.
Blue emperors mostly fly and don't rest. They are difficult to approach.

I believe the prey to be a female migrant hawker (Aeshna mixta) but I'm not sure.

The pic:
I've seen it flying with something big. I spotted where it landed and started to approach. (man, you can hear the munching from a 3m distance!) First in telezoom, then in supermacro mode. Super macro failed in the first time but the emperor landed again and I got a second chance (actual pic, distance about 6 cm)). As it was against the light, I wanted a third approach from the other side (through the bushs). But he got afraid when I pulled back my camera and disappeared for good above the woods :-(

For sure, I should have used an exposure bias and should learn to move even slower.

Thanks for looking.

Hi JeanMarie,
that's my big wish, to see such a majestic dragon sometime also so close and sitting - I only see them flying, no chance to make a shot! Thank you so much for this impressive and sharp shot, what a great moment, thanks
