The Heron's Beak.

If you look closely the beak of this bird is crossed at the tip.

The story behind the Picture: I learned that this was much appreciated, so here it goes!

I Used a f/6.3 and 1/160sec for this picture. I put my 50-500 Sigma (aka Bigma) in front of my camera and got real close. Because there was not much light I used a tri-pod.

Normally if you calcutate (Focallength times 1.6, meaning 500 times 1.6) the bracket you could use for your shuttertime to produce a sharp image, my 1/160sec would not be enough. Dilemma! A dark picture or an unsharp picture? I solved this as follows: I used the tripod. This helped a lot in bringing the sharpness into the picture.

The background was a pond with dark-green water. For the DOF the lens did the rest! I focussed the lightmetering on the light part of his neck and head. In Photoshop I added a bit of contrast to bring 'light' into the picture and I used the 'burning-tool' to deepen the surroundings.

Hope it helps you a bit the same way other comments helped me before!

Thanks for the nice comments to all.

Greetings Arjuna.

what a wonderful and interesting portrait, arjuna! :-)
perfectly sharp with beautiful soft lighting, terrific dark
and blurred bg and awesome details -
it does seem that the crossed beak disturbs him.
well seen & captured, thorsten.

Hi Arjuna,

I like the work you did on this nice and sharp photo. Could you please share with us how you did it?

I saw a blue crane with a similiar beak problem. I wonder if it is common with birds in captivity. Any out there who can enlighten us?

Hi Arjuna,

Fantastic first post, great POV and a lovely composition that look like a oil painting, nice details and beautiful colours with a great dark BG that nicely compiments the image.

I have just read your reply to Willem, it would be great if you could edit your notes to add this info as it would be a great help to all us beginners.

Excellente présentation!

Bravo.
Merci

Hello Arjuna,
I like how you have obtained the photo, with the heron being confused in its inferior part with the dark bottom.
An excellent composition.
