Classification and species:
There are four known species of Kookaburra found in Australia, New Guinea and the Aru Islands.

Unusually for close relatives, the Laughing and Blue-winged species are direct competitors in the area where their ranges overlap. This suggests that the two species, though having common stock, evolved in isolation (possibly during a period when Australia and New Guinea were more distant — see Australia-New Guinea) and were only brought back into contact in
relatively recent geological times.

Kookaburras are carnivorous. They will eat lizards, snakes, insects, mice and raw meat. The more social birds will accept handouts from humans and will take raw or cooked meat (even if high temperature)
from on or near open air barbeques if left unattended.

Hi Annick,

What a fine portrait of the Kookaburra! The details show up so well against the BG. I love the expression you managed to catch.

Hi Annick.
I didn't expect to see a portrait of a Kookaburra from the Netherlands! And a fine one at that. Great shot.

fantastische foto Anick,

hi annick!
nice portrait with good sharpness
and fine pov
look a little bit funny:)

What a great moment you captured here. I love that expression on this fellow. The depth of focus in just a tad shallow though you used f7.1???? If the tip of the beak had been sharp this would be a prize winner.

Evelynn : )

This is just so cute the detail is excellent and pose nice with lovely light nice and tight compo rgds Necip.

This guy has had a hard days night! Love the untidy plumage. Stunning camera work! TFS.

Hi Annick,
Extra ordinary with its untidy feathers and bad boy looks. A great work to capture this pose. With best regards,

Hi Annick

Another terrific portrait from you!
This is really well done!
I really like the details here and the way the feathers look on this cute Kookaburra - all fluffed up :))
Also this exceptional POV gave you a great angle from which, because of the shape and size of some feathers, it seems as if the bird would have big and thick eyebrowses and would be lifting this one up :))
The colors and tones are also a great ellement here - being nicely saturated, and the DOF is very well managed, too.

Bravo and TFS

Hi Annick.
Great portrait picture of this beautiful and funny guy. I like everything at your shot: cropping, excellent details, nice colours, impressive POV, 3D-effect, etc. BRAVO and my best regards.

G'day Annick!
As an Aussie I immeadilately laughed at the title you've chosen here - well done! You've captured the quirky nature of these wonderful birds very well. The aperture of 7.1 is enough to have a pretty good depth of focus from the point of focus on the mid beak back to the eye, which is good. The bars of the cage are very well disguised in the background. Maybe a very slight shift of the focal point to be directly on the eye, and a wider aperture would improve this even more.
cheers, John
