[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
So the New Year has come. Here in Europe - our American colleagues are still waiting for few more hours :-)

Has something changed? Well, this time it has, at least in Europe - starting from 4:30 hours ago, EU is now composed of 27 countries, with Romania and Bulgaria.

And despite if someone feels good or bad about EU, let's hope this will bring only good future for ALL of us!

But coming back to photography...

Luckily I could spend the last few days of the old year out of town.
With my wife and daughter we stayed in my wife's parents' house. It's placed in a very nice postglacial terrain, with many hills, forest, small lakes and swamps. And all only some 80km from my town - Lodz.
The weather wasn't enhancing but I couldn't hold my hands off the camera and explored the forest, desperately looking for some objects to photograph... Believe me it's not an easy task this part of year here :-)
But I found something I would like to share with you...

Xylaria hypoxylon
Stag's Horn or Candle Snuff Fungus
Phylum: Ascomycota
Class: Ascomycetes
Order: Xylariales
Family: Xylariaceae

It's a widespread and very common fungus in Europe, growing all year on dead wood of broad-leaved or more rarely coniferous trees.
Fruitbody antler-like, 30-50mm tall, sparsely branched, flattened, 2-6mm wide; base tapered, often bent; black hairy.
Branch tips grey to whitish (coloured by mass of conidia spores).
Flesh tough, elastic, white.
Ascospores formed in embedded perithecia which open via microscopic pores - kidney shaped, smooth, 12-15x5um. Asexual spores ellipsoid, smooth, hyaline.

Shooting conditions
The weather was really bad that day, gloomy with some fine snow fall, making the light very poor. That's why I had to use ISO 800, quite long time 1/80 and f:5.6. Unfortunately it wouldn't make the DOF good enough. But anyway I hope you will enjoy this shot...

Hi Michal,
A great 2007 to you as well. But what a start of the new year. Such a wonderful photo with such beautiful lighting. The details in the fungus are absolutely prefect. Love the colors and the DOF.

Great start into 2007. My favourite fungus in great composition with moss. I know what you're talking about - it is very hard to find someting to photograph last days. Anyway, I like this post and wish you and yur family all the best in 2007!

Hi Michal, I am glad you started this year with such a beautiful shot of this old Xylaria.
It might be difficult to find something nice to photograph in your area, but at last you managed a beautiful shot, I dont know why you say DOF is not good enough, I find a great DOF & BG & lights combination here, giving the photo an artistic look.
I like it!

Hello Michal,
It is not easy to present a shot of this pale Stagshorn fungus so that it stands out. But by your skillful use of a blurred green Bg, the sharpness of the fungus and the composition and lighting you have made a great job.
Well done and Happy New Year!

pts later!

Hola Michal,
Bonita composición con una profundidad de campo muy bien ajustada, enfocando la Xylaria y desenfocando el fondo. Feliz año nuevo y un cordial saludo

Hi Michal, lovely augural composition with wonderful colors. Very well done, a great new year for you, ciao Silvio

Great capture Michal with wonderful colors and nice compo.

I like it a lot: composition, POV, sharpness, colors, focus, lighting, background, framing, notes.

I like it: DOF (perhaps F6.3 or something more has been ideal).

I don't like it: nothing.

I love the point of view captured for this presentation.
Very happy 2007!

Hola Michal, preciosa esta foto donde se muestra una humedad ambientyal reflejada con una luz preciosa. Es una foto fantástica al igual que toda tu galería. Que tengas un feliz año 2007. Un saludo.

José Luis.

Hi Michal

Indeed the new year brigs change - we and the bulgarians entered the EU, but i don't know if i'm too happy about that...
But what the new year hasn't changed is my relationship with my TN friends :) No matter from what country they are, my feeling for them will always be the same :))
I'm glad to hear you got a bit of rest and some quality time with your family.
And also to see this beautiful macro work with this Candle Snuff Fungus. The details here are impressive, the colors most charming and the DOF great.

Cheers and Happy 2007

Very well done Michal.
It's an excellent comp IMHO, with effective use of your DOF. Great detail, light & color.
I think you did a fine job of finding a suitable subject in the forest, under these adverse conditions.
Best Wishes for Great New Year!

An attractive scene Michal. The fungi is quite artisticly captured, and I am pleased you managed to find this in the forest. It looks like deer antlers. TFS
And all the best for 2007

Hi Michal,
An excellent shot on this Staghorn Fungus. If there were water and fish, it would look like Staghorn Coral. Well done on the low light exposure. This does allow for rich color saturation. Nice detail with a well controlled DOF. Great job under less than ideal conditions.

Hello Michal,
wonderful composition, the DOF is very well choosen to give this subject very good impact, almost 3D like it pops out of the OOF BG. Very well composed with lovely colors.

nice micrcosmos shot Michal, This type of shot are always great to see. Well done

Hi Michal,
Although the DOF isn't perfect I enjoy your image very much.
I like the composition a lot with the other specimen blurred in the BG. Colors are fantastic and the Fungi is spectacular!
