Hello my Friends!
Today something from my deep archieve, a picture taken more than 4 years ago :>

This is Osmylus fulvicephalus (Neuroptera: Osmylidae) (in Polish: strumycznik zwyczajny), one of not too many European neuropterans connected with fresh waters.

Distribution: mainly C and SE Europe where adults can be found on vegetation near streams and fast running, small rivers both in mountains and lowland. Larvae are amphibiotic, living mainly on the banks of streams, but thay can also spent some time under the water level.

Occurrence: adults from May to July, larvae during rest of year. Adults prefer shadow areas near water.

Food: Both adults and larvae are predators. Imagines hunt for small insects like aphids, larvae eat different small insect larvae collected on the bottom of streams and small rivers (eg. larvae of Chironomidae and Culicidae flies).

Size: 40-52mm.

Cousins: in Europe there are also two other species from this genus: Osmylus elegantissimus and O. multiguttatus; together with hero from present picture they are the only members of family in Europe.

Have a nice week and thank you in advance for your time and visits! :>

Hello Radomir,
4 years old or not, this is a nice picture of the Neuropteran species. The sharpness of the head,
eyes, antennae and legs is impressive! Such 'unspectacular' insects are rarely presented at TN.
Therefore, thank you for posting!
Best wishes, Peter

Hello Radomir,
A fine capture of this Neuropterid insect taken from an excellent POV with fine sharpness against an OOF natural BG the head stands out well here, the brown colour and reason for its species name contrasting well.
TFS this beauty and of a group of insects rarely posted on TN,

hello Radomir,
photos dated but time does not erase the quality
excellent post with excellent details

greetings sERGIO

Hello Radomir, how are you MF? hope well.
What I like most of your shots is not only the quality, but the different subjects you show to us.
This is a very interesting insect which i think I have never found here. As you say in your title, it looks inocent and delicate to be such a predator :)
Tomorrow I will try to have a look at your recent posts from my office, as now I am using a 54 kbps internet radio access from home, and it is very very slow. This is the handicap of living in a remote place :>
Hope to be around more often from now on.
Best regards from your friend,

Hello Radomir,
Very beautiful green eye and transparent wings for this Osmylus fulvicephalus. I think that Neuropteras are of the most beautiful insects and you did a good job on this ancient picture, showing the insect with great sharpness and in an ideal pose.
Thanks also for the note

Realmente maravillosa Radomir, además técnicamente esta muy conseguida a excepción de la parte trasera de sus alas. Me gusta el encuadre y sobre todo la bella combinación de colores.
