Hello dear Friends!
I have to say that this presentation was inspired by
Horia's picture presenting two Ischnura species in very similar "pose" ;>

Here are Neoitamus cyanurus with the prey - Dioctria hyalipennis, also two different species belonging to one family - Asilidae (Diptera).

Really a lot of interesting things about biology of robber flies (Asilidae) can be found here on TN, and also a lot of pictures of these flies with their preys can be watched, so this time I include only a few words. ;>

What do robber flies eat?

Generally it is known that Asilidae are predators. They hunt of many different insect group, and the size of prey depends on size of the hunter. In the diet of robber flies there are many species belonging to flies (including other robber flies like on this picture), beetles, bees, bumblebees, wasps, moths and butterflies, bugs, and sometimes even damselflies. Really every kind of prey is good if it is not to large and not to heavy.

But how do they hunt?
European Asilidae can be divived into two main groups depending on hunting strategies. The first strategy includes species which prefer active flew, near the ground, usually among grass. The prey is taken fright and then the robber fly can catch it.
The secong strategy is rather different. The hunter is sitting on the surface of leaf, bark of tree, ect. This time the prey is mobile, and as soon as it appears in the area of predator a robber fly attacts it.
Both species presented on the photo prefer the second way.

Of course not every attack is successful, and not always the hunter... survives. The good example is a present picture.

Believe me or not, but when I started this observation a Dioctria specimen wanted to catch a small Hymenoptera species. Instead of eating a dinner this robber fly was the main dish on its cousin's dinner...
Well, the fortune is fickle, even in the insect world... ;>

This picture was taken in Chociszew village near Lodz, in the ecotone zone between forest and open area.

PS. Here you can find a new theme about Asilidae flies of Europe. Please feel free to add your pictures :>

Hi Radek and nice to see you posting again!
I hope you had a great time in your little free time and maybe even one or two chances for some nice shots :)

This is a great capture and indeed one that is similar to mine :)
It's truely amazing what animals are capable of and it's such moments that if captured make really dramatic compositions.
I love the great details you managed to get here as well as the excellent diagonal disposition of the subjects on the little branch.
The DOF here is impressive and the natural colors are terrific.
A superb job, my friend!

BRAVO and TFS

Hello Radomir,
Fine title to an interesting and well executed capture of a Robberfly preying on one of its cousins! I like the tangle of legs that this involves.
This is super sharp and with fine compo. against a pleasing neutral BG.

Hi Radomir.
Your both robber fly are great. The truth is that to one of them already it is all the same.

I like steel colour tone of the insects. Its very impressive. Our robber flies have brownish tone. Pictured scene and quality of the shot is outstanding, I suppose. Inclined composition are great as well as crisp sharpness, soft effective light and terrific details. Bravo. Superb done and TFS.
Alexei.

P.S. Thanks also for all.

Hi Radomir

Really nice picture, and the notes are really interessting !
Thx for sharing

Hello Radomir,
here's the difference between a good macro and an excellent macro (like yours): in the excellent macro there is something going on. And here we witness a Robber fly attack, no less. Wonderfully captured moment. There is the perfect technique (ring flash? Light disperser? tripod?). Unfortunately the "More Photo Info View" announces strange values on my screen, like 1/2 sec exposition etc. Great note, thanks for that, too:
Well done , you make me really want to see more and more of your pics.
My best regards to you,
Dietrich

Hello Radomir,
wow this is a excellent capture, and very interesting.
Great macro work, the DOF is spot on and the details are perfectly sharp.
Very nice diagonal composition to show of this great hunter.
TFS..Sky

Great action shot.
perfect light and details. Perfect balance of light between subject and background.
Brilliant DOF: insect totally in, while background nicely defocused.
I've always been in places where ishnura are seldom.

Hi Radomir,
that's also an impressive moment, even more details here than on my shot today.
I love it, thanks and greetings

Hello again Radomir friend,
Oh No! ... they are cannibals, it is too! I have to pay more attention to these insects in my region. I see that you have predatory behavior very interesting! Thanks again for suggesting this image! TFS, Regards, Jesús!
