Typical caterpilar of Sphingidae - small horn at the end ofthe body. It's one of the most dangerous pests for pine forests. Usually it's not easy to find caterpilars but pupation is made under the ground level, so if you've a bit of luck you can find caterpilar just walking on the ground. The best time for it is middle and end of September.

Pinus, Picea and sometimes Larix.

Adults are on the fly between May and July.

Magnífica !!

Hi Chris,
What a colorful and detailed capture of this caterpillar!
I like the clear details got on the insect, in whch we can appreciate its rich pattern and colours on it.
The inclination of the branch and the curve of te inscet works pretty well for the composition.
Well done and thanks for share it.

Hello Chris,
a very natural picture of that caterpillar. Well focused on the head and most parts of the body. By means of a smaller aperture also the thorax segements would have become sharper. Nice colours and light.
Best wishes, Peter

Hello Chris
How beautiful and curious this caterpilar! I like a lot its shape and colors, even if caterpilars give me a bit of the willies. The shot is a real humdinger, so sharp with great details, excellent POV, DOF and marvellous composition. I love it!
Congratulations and thank you very much for sharing.

Buen documento Chris, con una profundidad ligeramente corta; aún así muy bien captados muchos de esos bellos detalles de la Esfinge del pino. Buena luz y colores naturales. Tienes una bella galería.

Hi Chris,
a very interesting catch, the caterpillar is full of detail and wonderful color.,
POV and composition are great, and you captured its details very well.

Witaj Krzysztof,
jestem pelna podziwu dla Twego kunsztu fotograficznego. Zdjecie ostre i w pieknych barwach. Najbardziej nurtuje mnie pytanie jak tu wypatrzyc cos takiego podobnego do lodygi. N tak - tu niezbedna jest wiedza i bystre oczy.
Pozdrawiam i gratuluje.
