Last night when I went to bed I took a book just to read something. The nearest book I could find was something like butterflies & caterpillars (I guess there must be even more odd habits in bed...:-)
Anyway, I just scrolled though the book and came across the Clouded apollo Parnassius mnemosyne. I recognised this species as I took a picture of some 'white' in the Biebrza valley last spring. I looked it up and voila I just discovered I had seen a Clouded apollo. Some pretty sleepy story, isn't it?

Question to the polish friends: is it known in that region? My books indicate some population in Southern Poland and furthermore in the Baltic region.

Hello Jacob,
What a nice surprise to have at bedtime!! This is a lovely capture of this pretty butterfly. The wings show their transparency very well here and details are very sharp. I like its pose on the leaf too and the green background. Lucky and well done!
Many thanks and cheers, Ulla

Hello Jacob,
a beautiful and interesting capture. Among the 3 European Parnassius species, mnemosyne is clearly the most local. You show a well focused and sharp picture of that species!
Best wishes, Peter

Ciao Jacob.
Davvero una bella foto della Parnassius mnemosyne.
Mi piace soprattutto come sei riuscito a riprodurre il bianco delle ali e la parte trasparente, che di solito riflette la luce.

Oh.... What a great title that suits this picture so well... This is a superb specie that I have never seen before. I find really amazing the fact that we can see the transparency of its wings that takes the color of their environment. This is really interesting and well done. Thanks for this nice moment,

Hi Jacob

That is just the sort of thing I would read when I go to bed!

Lovely shot - excellent detail and light - you have captured the 'waxyness' of the wings very well.

Hi Jacob
Very good picture of this butterfly. Nice, simple composition, good exposition.
Also nice natural colours and good sharpness.

What concerns the distribution, I'm not a specialist but my friend, who knows butterflies very well (known here as cataclysta) says that this species can be found in that region.
Thanks for sharing

hello Jacob,
You have been very lucky to see this marvellous butterfly enjoying the sun on this green leaf. It makes a nice contrast to the white of the wings.
I never have seen this species, it is really a beauty.
Thanks a lot

Hi Jacob, a great story and a worthwhile read. Very nice pov on this pretty little Butterfly, shows the nice sharp and clear markings. Good light and great dof. I like the way the tips of the wings emulate the leaf it is on. Great work.

Hello Jacob,
How could I miss this one!
A great shot of a male Clouded Apollo, a very rare and protected species in Sweden. I photographed one years ago and scanned in the slide, but its is not as good a capture as this one.
Excellent POV, sharpness, good colours in natural lighting and the central composition works well.
I like the bedtime story story.
Thanks for sharing this one and for your kind words on my 300th.
Best wishes, Ivan

Hello Jacob

A beautiful shot of this dainty looking butterfly.
The focus and details are sharp.
Very good lighting, the colours are well saturated.
The textures of the wings is wonderful.
The POV really gives a good look at this butterfly.

Hello Jacob,
Yes, this species is very good known in this area. The problem is that all the books about butterflies written by western Europe people contains not verified or old informations. If you would like to know something more about our butterfly fauna - just ask me ;-)
